Succession Season 3 Tease Hints At Major Roy Family Civil War Twists

The posters for Succession season 3 potentially hint at some significant betrayals ahead for the Roy family. The satirical dramedy debuted on HBO in June 2018, centering around the exceptionally dysfunctional and obscenely wealthy Roy clan, who own the global media and entertainment conglomerate Waystar RoyCo. In particular, Succession has focused on the children of Logan Roy (Brian Cox) as they fight and scheme in the hope of eventually taking away their father’s control of the company.

The Succession season 2 finale offered viewers the latest chapter in that saga. In the episode, “This Is Not for Tears”, Kendall (Jeremy Strong) is set up to be the scapegoat for a scandal at Waystar’s cruise division. The scandal involves, among other things, sexual assault and attempts at a cover-up, and Kendall is expected to fall on his sword for Logan as he has throughout the second season. Kendall surprises everyone, however, when he goes off-script at a press conference. Instead of reading from his prepared statement, Kendall calmly and clearly blames Logan for the cruise scandal and says that his father should not remain at the head of Waystar. Logan, who is watching the press conference on TV, appears to flash something close to a smile. For a moment at least, the ruthless Logan seemed proud at the cunning that his son displayed.

However, judging by the Succession season 3 trailer, that moment quickly passed. Logan is clearly back to warring with his son, with the rest of the Roy family having to choose who they’ll support in this latest struggle for power. Newly-released posters for the upcoming season play on this fact. It shows Kendall and Logan glaring at each other from opposite sides, while they walk with a purpose. The posters are also distinct in interesting ways that could potentially offer insight into where the show is headed.

In the version of the poster that was shared with the press, Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Roman (Kieran Culkin) line up behind Logan. Meanwhile, Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) is behind Kendall. In another version, posted to Succession’s account on Twitter, Shiv is on Kendall’s side while Roman and Tom have moved over to Logan. And lastly, in the version uploaded to Instagram for Succession, married duo Shiv and Tom are Team Logan while Roman sides with his older brother Kendall. Also, in all three posters, Connor (Alan Ruck) alters allegiances. In the press version, Logan’s eldest son looks to be neutrally trailing behind. But he also dithers between the two opposing camps.

Interestingly, fan-favorite Cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun) is the only one who remains on Team Kendall in all three posters. This is perhaps the clearest indication that three versions are not merely an attempt at viral marketing, since it connects to what the series has already established. Greg, notably, is the one who helped to facilitate Kendall’s shocking turn in the season 2 finale by providing key documents regarding the cruise cover-up. This could mean that Greg would be unable to switch over to Logan even if he wanted to. It could also, perhaps, point to a deeper loyalty between the two characters. Though they’re far from friends, Greg and Kendall have become somewhat closer than when they first crossed paths.

Another thing to consider is that a recurring theme of Succession so far has been that Logan’s children have never been able to put their issues with each other long enough to unite against their emotionally and at times physically abusive father, Logan. While it’s far from confirmed, it looks like the divide will continue as family members may very well leverage their support to Kendall or Logan depending on the episode. It adds plenty of intrigue to a long-delayed season of television that fans have been waiting to see.
