Succession Season 4 Renewed At HBO

Succession has been renewed for season 4 at HBO. Following the wealthy and dysfunctional Roy family in their quest to control the media giant Waystar RoyCo., Succession picked up right where it left off when it recently returned for season 3. In the wake of Kendall Roy’s (Jeremy Strong) shocking press conference, which sees Kendall go off-script and link his father, Logan Roy (Brian Cox) directly to a wide-ranging cruise ship scandal, all of the Roy family are left to choose whether they want to side with Kendall or Logan. Actors including Alexander Skarsgård, Hope Davis, Adrien Brody, and Sanaa Lathan, will also be making guest appearances in the currently airing season.

The satirical dramedy has long been a hit with critics. It has also been a consistent fixture at major awards, winning an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series in 2020. But, for the premiere of Succession season 3, which debuted on October 17, HBO announced that the show garnered over 1.4 million viewers across all platforms. The numbers represented a high-point for the series, and also nabbed the distinction of being the best premiere-night performance of any HBO original since the launch of the HBO Max streaming service in May 2020.

Succession has been renewed for season 4 at HBO, according to TVLine. In a statement, HBO’s executive vice president of programming Francesca Orsi praised the series for its “indelible wit, humanity, and precision.” Orsi also expressed excitement for what the next installment of the show would bring.

Given its recent jump in the ratings and its consistent acclaim, an early renewal isn’t surprising. It does, however, serve as a reminder that series creator Jesse Armstrong plans for Succession to end with season 4 or 5. These comments have since been echoed by series star Brian Cox and the general sense is that, given the relatively limited scope of the dramedy and the focus on the Roys, the narrative can’t continue on for several years without the quality of the storytelling suffering as a result.

So far though, in Succession season 3, the show might’ve aired its best episode yet. In the second hour of the new season, Logan’s adult children gather in an apartment to discuss their next moves. Functioning largely as a bottle episode, with the characters mostly in one setting, the episode highlights the strengths of the HBO hit. From the performances of the cast to the writing and the directing, the Emmy-winning dramedy is firing on all cylinders. While it may not continue for much longer, at least fans can be assured the Roy family saga isn’t over just yet.
