Jared Leto’s portrayal of The Joker in Suicide Squad (2016) was drastically cut down, but how much is known about his role in David Ayer’s original cut? Following recent social media comments made by David Ayer on the heavy changes made to Suicide Squad, the #ReleaseTheAyerCut hashtag has spiked once again. Though the movie saw a major overhaul in the aftermath of the polarized reception to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Leto’s Joker was hit especially hard by the changes.

Full details on the extent of the Joker’s role in the Ayer Cut haven’t been revealed, but some recently leaked script pages have shed substantial light on the matter. Ayer himself has confirmed the leaked pages as authentic. Prior to this, a few other details about Mr. J’s Ayer Cut role had also been revealed by Ayer and, together, they present the Joker in a much darker and more front-and-center role compared to what was seen in cinemas.

The Joker’s role also ties into Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn being the central figure of the film similar to the role of Cyborg (Ray Fisher) in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and with what’s been revealed so far, it’s becoming increasingly undeniable that the Joker was an extremely shortchanged character. With the Ayer Cut campaign beginning to reach a fever pitch, it remains to be seen if the film could finally be released with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad already debuted, but the newly revealed Joker material has undoubtedly added a huge amount of energy to the push for it. Here’s everything that’s known about the Joker’s role in Suicide Squad’s Ayer Cut.

What Was Previously Known About The Joker’s Role

Joker scenes known to exist in Ayer’s cut revealed over the years include a longer version of his and Harley’s nightclub meeting with Monster T (Common), which culminates in the Joker pushing him into suicide. Additionally, after the Joker’s helicopter crash during his failed attempt to extract Harley, the Joker struck a deal with Cara Develingne’s Enchantress (who had her own story changes) in exchange for getting Harley back and the two ruling over Gotham City. The Joker would then return with an ash-charred face in the finale, which is where the biggest known difference (at the time) about his role in Suicide Squad was seen.

Rather than leaving with Joker, Harley finally broke off their relationship in the final act. Some of this footage was seen in the movie’s “Ballroom Blitz” trailer, with the Joker appearing with his burned face and tossing a tear gas grenade and exclaiming “Bye-bye!”, presumably to Harley. All of this shows that the Joker’s role was much more significant to Suicide Squad than his role on the periphery in the theatrical version, among other reported differences in the Ayer Cut.

Some of the deleted Joker footage would make its way back into Suicide Squad’s extended version on home media. This includes a scene early in their relationship of Harley chasing the Joker down by motorcycle as he tells her that she is “not part of my plan.” Behind-the-scenes video seen online also shows the Joker striking Harley in this scene, and while it isn’t known if this is in the Ayer Cut, this was likely intended to show the depth of the mental dominance he’s exerted over her and setting up her finally breaking free of him.

Newly Revealed Joker Scenes

As the push for the Ayer Cut has ramped up and built more of a business case, a considerable amount of new Joker scenes have been revealed in recently leaked script pages. The leaks show the Joker to be a much more volatile character in the original script, with the movie’s early nightclub scene finally showing the previously known sequence of the Clown Prince of Crime pushing Monster T into committing suicide. The Joker’s raid of Arkham Asylum is also shown in the script leaks, while Mr. J’s callous attitude towards the rest of Task Force X is seen when Dr. Van Criss reveals deactivating the signal to Harley’s neck detonator will set off the rest of the squad’s.

The Joker also shows his extremely sinister sense of humor when he pops up in bed next to Judge Whitman, having kidnapped his wife, in order to get to Van Criss. Clearly, Ayer meant to portray the Joker as much more of a prominent and impactful, though still heavily tattooed villain compared to his side-story in the studio version. Apart from his own characterization in Ayer’s script, the Joker’s relationship with Harley Quinn was where both of their arcs in the movie were really impacted by the changes made to the movie.

Newly Revealed Details On Joker & Harley’s Relationship

The leaked script pages reveal some differences in the scene of The Joker performing electro-shocks on Harley in Arkham, Mr. J stating “forget you ever met me…” as opposed to the “I’m just going to hurt ya, really, really bad,” line that was heavily featured in the marketing and included in the movie’s released version. Considering that the latter was in the 2015 Comic-Con trailer released before the changes made to Suicide Squad, it may have still made it into Ayer’s version of the film, but this is also just the beginning of the differences in their romance in the script, which include a very different Harley from the theatrical version (and Gunn’s standalone sequel).

Other leaked script pages show the Joker consuming alcohol next to a corpse with a smile etched into his face, and another scene involved the Joker nude and in a depressed state with Harley arriving to lift his spirits. The aforementioned scene of Harley chasing the Joker down by motorcycle also includes some very intimate contact between the two. It’s possible a hybrid approach might’ve been settled upon in Ayer’s cut, but the script plants unmistakable seeds for their break-up in Mr. J’s helicopter rescue of Harley. The leaks reveal that the Joker is more annoyed than thrilled at coming to Harley’s rescue, and also states “Maybe we should date other people” before shoving Harley out of the helicopter.

Their subsequent reunion in the third act also shows Harley beginning to assert herself when the Joker arrives during the battle with Enchantress. Once it’s ended (with Harley also beginning a new romance with Deadshot), the Joker puts a gun to Harley over her defiance, but she remains undaunted, with the Joker departing after realizing she’s broken up with him. His need for control doesn’t dissipate, however, as another leak of the ending reveals Amanda Waller being informed of the ever-possessive Joker breaking Harley out of prison.

Since the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the Ayer Cut’s push has gained steady steam, and with the new script leaks, it has become louder than ever. Though Warner Bros. has previously stated they won’t be moving ahead with it, DCEU fans are nothing if not determined, as the Snyder Cut itself is testament to – and the push certainly intensified after Leto’s Joker returned in the Knightmare tease in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Whether “David Ayer’s Suicide Squad” appearing on HBO Max is something the future holds, one thing that is known for sure about it is that Leto’s portrayal of The Joker made far more of an impact in Ayer’s version of Suicide Squad.
