Suicide Squad Why Releasing Ayers Directors Cut Is More Likely Now

Now that Zack Snyder’s Justice League is on the way, there are really no reasons left not to release David Ayer’s director’s cut of Suicide Squad. It has been officially announced that the long-awaited Snyder Cut of Justice League will be releasing in 2021 on HBO Max, and some DC fans are hoping that David Ayer’s version of Suicide Squad will finally get its own release as well.

As the third installment in the DC Extended Universe, Suicide Squad was set to embrace a darker and more grounded take on its character – a group of captured supervillains who work for the government in return for reduced sentences. Unfortunately, due to extensive reshoots, the editing was choppy, the tone was wildly inconsistent, and several characters were drastically underdeveloped.

The disappointing theatrical cut of Justice League (which mostly featured footage shot by Joss Whedon) led to a lot of unrest among the fans. Snyder’s original story was replaced with something more streamlined, light-hearted and generic. This led to the fans pushing relentlessly for the Snyder Cut, until Warner Bros. finally obliged. Fans who were unhappy with the theatrical version of Suicide Squad that Warner Bros. released in 2016 have been inspired by the success of the #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement to make similar demands on Ayer’s behalf. Now that Zack Snyder’s Justice League is becoming a reality, the idea of a Suicide Squad director’s cut seems a whole lot more doable.

DCEU Canon Isn’t Strict Any More

After Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League were panned by critics and general moviegoers, Warner Bros. shifted the direction of the DCEU away from a strict shared canon. Todd Phillips’ Joker presented a dark and disturbing narrative that was unlike any other Joker the audience had seen before, and ignored the existence of Suicide Squad’s Joker. Along with this, Ezra Miller’s cameo in The CW TV show The Flash opens up possibilities for alternate timelines or universes that can be explored, and demonstrated a relaxed view towards keeping the movie and TV universes separate. Meanwhile, Matt Reeves’ Batman looks to be leaving the Ben Affleck version of the character behind and embarking on a fresh start with Robert Pattinson in the role.

Aspects like these prove that not only is DCEU introducing newer perspectives and more unconventional takes on classic DC characters, but is also loosening its grip on the idea of a strictly maintained creative tone and continuity (like the Marvel Cinematic Universe has). DCEU canon is now flexible enough to allow for alternate versions of movies like the Snyder Cut, and the same holds true for Ayer’s cut as well. HBO Max has already been creating space for superheroes like Green Lantern and extra treats like the Snyder Cut, and the release of the Ayer Cut would fit right in. Moreover, the release would not undermine James Gunn’s upcoming sequel/soft reboot The Suicide Squad, since that movie looks to be starting with a mostly fresh slate anyway.

It Has The Suicide Squad Director James Gunn’s Blessing

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, in a tweet responding to a fan, has said that he would have no problem whatsoever with the release of Ayer’s cut of Suicide Squad. His support for Ayer and his creative capabilities shows that he probably is as excited as fans to see what Ayer had in store for Suicide Squad originally. The release Suicide Squad’s director’s cut wouldn’t undermine excitement for Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad; if anything it could give it a much-needed boost in interested, since the idea of a partial reboot of a movie that only released five years ago has created more confusion than anticipation. Ayer responded warmly to Gunn’s tweet, praising Gunn’s own creativity as a filmmaker.

The directors of both big-screen takes on the Suicide Squad have mutual respect for one another, and both are interested in the idea of Suicide Squad’s Ayer Cut being seen by fans. Gunn in particular doesn’t seem to mind the idea of another version of Suicide Squad releasing at around the same time as his own movie. Given that a number of characters are returning (like Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller), the Ayer Cut could actually serve as a great piece of cross-promotion.

The Snyder Cut Proves It Can Be Done

The Snyder Cut’s release is eagerly anticipated by fans all over the world. The announcement was preceded by a years-long campaign from those who wanted to see Snyder’s original vision, which included establishing Darkseid as the villain for a sequel and entire subplots that were left out. The release could also possibly shed some light on the sequel to Justice League and the direction it was supposed to take. And, as a bonus for WarnerMedia, the Snyder Cut being exclusive to HBO Max can help draw in subscribers in the streaming service’s second year.

Similarly, the possibility of a director’s cut of Suicide Squad has reignited some of the initial hype there was for the movie after the first trailers (which featured many scenes that didn’t end up in the movie) were released. It’s true that there would be some expense attached to finishing Ayer’s cut of the movie; Warner Bros. is spending $20-30 million on the Snyder Cut of Justice League., due to VFX work that needs finishing and other post-production costs. However, the budget for Suicide Squad’s director’s cut would likely be lower, and justifiable as the cost of a new exclusive release for HBO Max. All-in-all, it seems like there’s no reason not to deliver the Ayer Cut, and plenty of good reasons to do so.
