Suicide Squads Starro Had A We Are Groot Moment in the Comics

Fantastical characters have been a mainstay in Marvel and DC Comics for decades now, which Starro and Groot can attest to in James Gunn’s film adaptations of The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy. The Suicide Squad introduced Starro the Conqueror, an alien resembling a starfish, as its final villain. Like in the comics, this Starro wreaked havoc when it released tiny versions of itself onto unsuspecting people. Attaching themselves to people’s faces, Starro’s offspring integrated their victims to the alien starfish’s collective consciousness, forming a type of zombie mind control army that Bloodsport, Ratcatcher 2, Polka Dot Man, Peacemaker, Rick Flag, King Shark, and Harley Quinn had to fight off.

Starro’s role in The Suicide Squad movie is interesting considering how one of its progeny, nicknamed Jarro by Batman, had a moment during Scott Snyder’s Justice League run that strongly resembled another one of James Gunn’s films, Guardians of the Galaxy. At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot saved the rest of his team by encasing them in a protective shell, telling them, “We are Groot.” Groot’s poignant sacrifice and deviation from his regular vocabulary of “I am Groot” was the emotional focal point of the film.

In Justice League #29, Batman was forced to talk his alien starfish son, Jarro, down from attacking him and the rest of the Justice League (written by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV, art by Bruno Redondo, colors by Hi-Fi, letters by Tom Napolitano). Jarro, a piece of the original Starro the Conqueror, was brought up in a little jar by Batman, who he saw as a father figure. During his tenure as Batman’s favorite Robin, Jarro experienced a vision of the Justice League being beaten by the Legion of Doom. Horrified at the idea that his adopted dad and friends could experience such a horrible fate, Jarro grew to full Starro size and unleashed his spores onto the Justice League in an effort to prevent them from leaving the Hall of Justice to fight the Legion of Doom.

Pleading to his son, Batman told Jarro that his Conqueror form was not his true self, stating that, “Every damn thing out here [in the universe] is like you. Fighting to be better than its nature. We are all… Jarro.” And while the last line confused some of Batman’s Justice League allies, the point still stands that Jarro’s story applies to anyone and anything in the universe who has ever struggled to be better than they were in their past.

Batman saying that, “We are all… Jarro” echoes the “We are Groot” line from Guardians of the Galaxy, highlighting the similarities between the two aliens. While Groot did not threaten the lives of his allies, he, like Jarro, started off as a misunderstood character who later discovered the power of friendship and family in his Guardians crew. And though Jarro and Groot are some of the most outlandish creatures from comics to hit movie screens, they still have had moments of great wisdom and clarity that make them beloved by fans everywhere.

“We are all… Jarro” sounds goofy on its own, but it excels in its emotional resonance because of its truth. Especially coming from Batman, who is no stranger to atoning for past mistakes, it is important for everyone to be reminded that self-improvement is seldom a linear process. The members of the Justice League are capable of doing grave evil as much as they are capable of good, and Jarro’s arc represents this exact dynamic. Even though he was originally Starro, Jarro’s Groot moment proves that life’s anxieties can sometimes push even the most pure-hearted characters into their worst selves.
