Bowser is gaining a ferocious new form in the upcoming Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, and now fans have a clue as to what gives Mario’s archnemesis this new cursed power thanks to a Nintendo hint. Bower’s fiery new “Fury” form was first revealed to players in the latest trailer for the Nintendo Switch port of Super Mario 3D World, where his gigantic size forces Mario to take on a new form of his own to combat him against a dark and stormy night sky.

Naturally, fans have been coming up with their own theories as to what transforms Bowser into this Ganon-like new form in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, as well as praising the beast for harkening back to the franchise’s grand old tradition of gigantic boss battles and giving him nicknames like “God Slayer Bowser.” Now, Nintendo is teasing what created this imposing new Bowser form, which some feel would be more at home in Super Mario Odyssey than Super Mario 3D World, in the first place.

Information from the Nintendo UK website provides a some insight on Fury Bowser in its Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury listing, explaining that Bowser has “been tainted by a mysterious black goop, turning him into a humongous monster bent on total destruction!” It goes on to say that Mario will have to join forces with an “unlikely companion” (which the trailers and screenshots reveal is none other than Bowser Jr.) to “to travel across a series of islands on Lake Lapcat, collect the mysterious Cat Shines by completing different platforming challenges, and harness their power to stop the terrifying Fury Bowser.”

Bowser’s Fury was announced as part of a Switch remaster of the Wii U’s Super Mario 3D World in September, coinciding with the Mario franchise’s ongoing 35th-anniversary celebration. Since then, Nintendo has been slowly but surely peeling back the details on this new expansion, including info shared on a recently launched website ahead of the title’s planned February release.

Not much is known yet of the black ooze that has apparently infected Bowser, but a glimpse of a few new enemies in the previously-released Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury trailer suggests that it is corrupting his army of minions, as well. This is likely what forces Bowser Jr. to team up with Mario to try to break whatever spell his extra-fearsome father is under. In any case, this unlikely duo seems to have its work cut out for them in defeating the menacing Fury Bowser when Super Mario World 3D + Bowser’s Fury arrives on Switch next month.
