Super Mario Party Players Still Waiting For New Boards 2 Years Later

Super Mario Party players were expecting more from the Switch game than was initially delivered and Nintendo still hasn’t delivered.

Nintendo has been the frontrunner when it comes to party games for decades, starting with the very first Mario Party on the N64. Throughout the years it has released some gems that are still fondly remembered by players who were ironically brought closer to their friends by being driven to hating them within a game. This is especially true with the latest addition to the Mario Party franchise which is bringing all the good things about the games back – making it a return to form of sorts for the series. Super Mario Party might have reintroduced some great aspects, but it is a little emptier than what fans were expecting, and 2 years after its release players are still waiting for some new content.

Nintendo’s first Mario Party games are considered some of the best party games ever made. Set up as a board game with some tough mini-games to decide the fate of the players, these Mario Party games were cutthroat, and with an every-player-for-themselves attitude, they got competitive, which is what made them so much fun to play. Later Mario Party games ditched this competitive formula for a more randomized game that relied on chance rather than strategy, which took a lot of the fun of winning away.

Super Mario Party is the first in the franchise to be released on the Nintendo Switch, giving it the capability to be sold digitally, updated, and have online features. Unfortunately, Nintendo hasn’t put these tools to good use on the game, so although fans had high hopes for this return to a competitive formula, they are also still waiting for Nintendo to add something more to the $60 game. Reddit user SquareBlanketsSuck made a post sharing their disappointment. They say that it is more like a $20 game, feeling like it doesn’t have much in it and that they wish they could see games like the old Mario Party games. With only 4 small boards and some game modes “most people don’t care for”, they were sure when they bought the game that more content would be added through updates. However here, 2 years later, there are still only 4 small boards.

The online capabilities were also a let down for many who had hoped to be able to play a proper game of Mario Party with their friends, especially during lockdown when friends can’t play together in person. Nintendo has allowed fans to play some great games through their online service, but in Super Mario Party they squandered their opportunity to make a great online multiplayer for the Switch, and instead, the online play only features a small collection of the mini-games.

This is disappointing for players who bought the game to play online, since the main game doesn’t even exist as an online option. Nintendo has had two years to update this and add features worth the money spent on the game, but hasn’t touched their latest entry into the series, probably because despite its flaws it is still one of the best-selling games on the Switch. However with an online platform comes an expectation for updates or new content to be added to games, especially if it doesn’t have much content, to begin with. Fans are rightly upset that there are still only 4 boards to play on in Super Mario Party, but knowing Nintendo, players shouldn’t be holding their breath for new boards to arrive.
