DOOM’s resident demon-busting Doom Slayer might not be the final guest character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but he is going to appear as a Mii Fighter Gunner costume. Tuesday’s “Mr. Sakurai Presents” livestream drew in a huge number of viewers, all of whom were waiting to see just who would be the last to join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with some queuing up a day in advance.

Before today’s big reveal, fans had a variety of ideas about who was going to be the final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character. One of the hopefuls was the Doom Slayer, a theory fueled by a copyright strike Nintendo filed back in June. However, this wasn’t to be, as the final Smash character was eventually revealed as Kingdom Hearts’ Keyblade-wielding protagonist Sora. Sora was a popular guess well before a Nintendo and Disney Music leak tipped players off, as the crossover didn’t seem impossible since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate already landed Square Enix characters in the form of Final Fantasy VII’s Cloud Strife and Sephiroth. While Doomguy won’t be taking the final character slot in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it looks like the armored demon-killer will still show up in the game in a different form.

During the final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate “Mr. Sakurai Presents” livestream, the director revealed the final batch of alternate Mii Fighter costumes alongside Sora. These will consist of outfits based on Splatoon’s Octoling and Judd, as well as a full Mii Fighter Gunner costume modeled after the Doom Slayer’s signature green armor from Doom Eternal. This final pack of Mii Fighters will be available on October 18. The full stream aired on the official Nintendo YouTube channel and marks the final announcement for the crossover platform fighter.

Doom Slayer’s inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate may seem bizarre due to how incredibly violent his home series is in comparison to Nintendo’s family-friendly fare, but there is some unofficial precedence for it. In 2020, DOOM Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons launched on the same day, leading to a wave of crossover fan art and more involving Doom Slayer and Isabelle, who is also a playable Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character. While Doom Slayer didn’t get the same distinction, Mii Fighters come in three different varieties (Swordmaster, Fighter, and Gunner), so his Gunner appearance allows him to play similarly to fellow armored killing machine Samus with the right moves equipped.

While Doom fans might be disappointed to discover that the Doom Slayer won’t be making a full appearance as the final guest fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, at least they will be able to play as him in the form of an alternate Mii Fighter Gunner costume. The final batch of Mii Fighters will be made available to purchase on October 18, right along with Sora from Kingdom Hearts.
