When will Netflix’s Supercrooks release, and how does it connect to Jupiter’s Legacy? The upcoming live-action adaptation marks the latest project from comic book writer Mark Millar, who sold his Millarworld franchise to the streaming service in 2017. Netflix canceled Jupiter’s Legacy in June 2021 after just one season, but original characters will reportedly be featured in Supercrooks.
Produced for $200 million, Jupiter’s Legacy season 1 released in May 2021 and received mostly negative reviews from critics. The problems began when the showrunner Steven S. DeKnight left the series over creative differences while filming, and the show was eventually canceled, in part, because of creative conflict between Millar and Netflix. Jupiter’s Legacy follows multiple generations of superheroes and spans from the 1920s to the present day, so it seemed the like series would air for multiple seasons.
Netflix released the Jupiter’s Legacy cast from their contracts, but Millar has announced a new project that will be set in the same universe. Few details have been released about the upcoming crime-themed show, but it will presumably allow for various Millarworld crossover storylines. Here’s everything we know about Supercrooks, a comic adaptation that revolves around a European heist.
How Supercrooks & Jupiter’s Legacy Cross Over
According to a June 2021 report, the cancellation of Jupiter’s Legacy allows Netflix and Millar to develop an anthology franchise that continues the storyline. Whereas the 2021 Netflix show centers on the first generation of superheroes and their children, Supercrooks takes place in the same universe and follows a group of supervillains. Per Millar, the protagonists from Jupiter’s Legacy will hopefully return in the future:
“Given where we’re going next, we’ve made the tough call of letting our incredible cast out of their show commitment as we continue to thoughtfully develop all realms of the Jupiter’s Legacy saga. We’re confident we’ll return to it later and just want to say thanks to you guys for your continued support and to the cast and crew who made this look so great.”
Supercrooks Is Being Made Twice (Are The Shows Linked?)
Netflix will release two adaptations of Supercrooks based on the comic book series that was written by Millar and illustrated by written by Leinil Francis Yu. In June 2021, an animated version will premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France. The live-action adaptation of Supercrooks will release later and serve as the next installment of the Jupiter’s Legacy universe saga.
Supercrooks Story & Cast
Originally published in 2012, Supercrooks follows an American supervillain named Johnny Bolt. Rather than competing against fellow baddies in the United States, he recruits an Ocean’s Eleven-style crew and plans to rob an iconic supervillain known as The Bastard in Madrid, Spain. Supercrooks stays true to the genre’s “one last heist” trope over the course of four issues. A cast for the Netflix adaptation hasn’t been announced.
Supercrooks Release Date
Supercrooks doesn’t have an official release date. Mark Millar has several Millarworld movies and TV shows in the works at Netflix, including the aforementioned animated series, so the live-action adaptation may not be a priority for 2022. However, most of the Millarworld adaptations are movies, so it’s possible that Supercrooks could release in 2023, either after or before another series in development, The Magic Order.
