Supergirl Reveals Why She Wont Adopt Her New CW Costume in the Comics

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #2!

Supergirl will not be sporting The CW’s Supergirl costume in the comics anytime soon. Supergirl just began a long expedition that will take her to the outer depths of space in the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Tasked by her newfound ally Ruthye, they will be hunting down the dangerous criminal known as Krem. But unbeknownst to Supergirl, her journey will be more than just a physical one. Supergirl will be searching for her place in the universe, away from Superman and Earth.

A big part of being every superhero’s identity is the costume they wear. In The CW’s Supergirl, the Girl of Steel, played by Melissa Benoist, originally sported the classic red skirt that the character has worn in comics for decades. But due to the fact that the show is filmed in Vancouver, it’s freezing for a lot of the year. Thus, they made the conscious decision to alter Supergirl’s suit to fit the filming conditions. This is where Supergirl’s pants come in! The TV show made a big deal out of the costume change with Supergirl going as far to exclaim “Pants!” when seeing her new get-up for the first time.

In Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #2 by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, Supergirl makes it clear that she loves her red skirt. This happens as an assassin thirsty to kill anyone related to Superman threatens her. They ask her if she’s Supergirl, at which point Kara lists out all the obvious things that make her Supergirl. She includes the fact that she is wearing “a very fashionable red skirt,” suggesting that she is very happy with her outfit. From this, it can be assumed that Supergirl in the comics won’t be getting pants anytime soon.

Having a skirt is a unique costuming choice that makes Supergirl distinct from Superman. Over the years, Supergirl has nearly always sported the “fashionable” red skirt, apart from a few times where she’s gone for the pants get-up. So, Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl wearing pants isn’t something completely revolutionary. However, it is very cool to see Supergirl sporting a different style of costume, making her distinct from her current comic book counterpart. The blue pants are a great new component of Supergirl’s upgraded suit on the show.

Nevertheless, it’s great to see Infinite Frontier’s Supergirl loving her get-up. It’s possible that the TV show’s costume could be adapted to the comics in the future, just like how DC Rebirth took a lot of Supergirl’s DNA from The CW’s version of the character. With the TV show making Supergirl’s new blue pants a big thing, it’s great to see Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow making a deal out of her fashionable red skirt! Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #2 is available in comic book stores and on digital platforms now.
