Supergirl Season 2 Best And Worst Episodes Ranked

While Supergirl hit it off with viewers in its first season, the Girl of Steel still had a tough battle to overcome and that was the show’s home network: CBS. Despite having the highest ratings of the DC TV shows, it still wasn’t enough to match CBS’ standard. Because of that, it took a while before it was decided whether or not the series would live for another season. Thankfully, the Melissa Benoist drama was renewed, but not by CBS. Instead of keeping it, CBS allowed the series to move over to The CW to join Greg Berlanti’s fellow Arrowverse shows.

By allowing Supergirl to join The CW line-up, it became clear that this is where the show should have been from the start. The second season started and ended with a bang by introducing Superman (Tyler Hoechlin), Kara’s participation in the crossover, the Luthor women being deeply explored, and more. With that said, these are the best and worst episodes of Supergirl season two.

10 WORST: Distant Sun (Episode 17)

Supergirl Season 2 Best And Worst Episodes Ranked

One of the main relationships in season two was the romance between Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima.) However, that didn’t mean that the relationship was drama-free, with the seventeenth episode being an example. Titled Distant Sun, one of the plots for that episode was the awkward situation with Maggie’s ex-girlfriend that took up way too much time that it needed.

While it may have explored Maggie’s inner emotional issues, it doesn’t completely fit in with an already packed episode. Then there is also the drama with Mon-El (Chris Wood) and his family where his mother Rhea (Teri Hatcher) ends up as the big bad for the rest of the season.

9 BEST: The Martian Chronicles (Episode 11)

Supergirl Season 2 Best And Worst Episodes Ranked

Martian Manhunter (David Harewood) has had his fair share of strong Martian themed episodes. In season two, we had the eleventh episode The Martian Chronicles where a White Martian who is after M’Gann (Sharon Leal) invades the D.E.O.

Because of its ability to shape-shift into anyone it wants, the episode becomes psychologically charged as everyone begins to suspect each other. The suspense is at its highest in The Martian Chronicles by keeping the viewers on the edge of their seats.

8 WORST: Homecoming (Episode 14)

Supergirl Season 2 Best And Worst Episodes Ranked

The Jeremiah Danvers (Dean Cain) storyline is one of the things that still haven’t been properly solved in the series. The fourteenth episode marks his penultimate appearance before going completely M.I.A. from the series.

In Homecoming, the Danvers women are thrilled when Jeremiah returns to their lives. But it becomes clear early on that he is working with Cadmus, doing so to protect Alex from getting hurt. Given that Jeremiah doesn’t appear again after the next episode, Homecoming feels pointless as it started something that never got finished.

7 BEST: Luthors (Episode 12)

Supergirl Season 2 Best And Worst Episodes Ranked

Season two had lots of strengths and one of them was the introduction of Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) who has become a key player in the series ever since her debut. We also meet her villainous adoptive mother Lillian (Brenda Strong) whose complicated relationship with Lena keeps getting more intriguing the more its explored.

In the twelfth episode Luthors, Lena and Lillian take center stage in all the good ways, particularly Lena. With Lillian determined to paint her adopted daughter as evil, just like her brother, Lena does whatever she can to clear her name. From the first to the last moments of Luthors, it’s a genuine blast to see Lena really working to not end up on the path of her fellow family members.

6 WORST: The Darkest Place (Episode 7)

Supergirl Season 2 Best And Worst Episodes Ranked

With J’onn J’onzz having taken the form of Hank Henshaw, season two explored what happened to the real D.E.O. director. In the comics, Hank is better known as Cyborg Superman to the DC fans. However, the series didn’t really make their version feel like the comic character as he was only Cyborg Superman in name.

In the seventh episode The Darkest Place, fans get their first taste of Hank now acting as Cyborg Superman and it’s a complete mess. From the cheap design of the cyborg-mask to what felt like a watered-down portrayal of the character, The Darkest Place is just the beginning of a bad storyline for the show’s take on Cyborg Superman.

5 BEST: Nevertheless, She Persisted (Episode 22)

Supergirl Season 2 Best And Worst Episodes Ranked

The season two finale wraps the Girl of Steel’s second year with action and tragedy. For starters, Supergirl has an epic showdown with a Silver Kryptonite-infected Superman who believes he is fighting General Zod. Rhea unleashes a Daxamite invasion as Kara and her team goes up against her army. But a backup plan by the Luthor women is when Kara and Mon-El’s relationship is deeply affected.

An atmospherical bomb is used to line Earth’s entire atmosphere with lead which is Daxamite’s weakness. But this causes Mon-El to not be able to stay on Earth as a heartbroken Kara sends him away in his pod so that he can survive. Although she has no idea that Mon-El ends up getting sucked into a wormhole. But as one threat comes to an end, the finale teases the arrival of Kara’s next foe who also left Krypton as the planet was destroyed and is somewhere on Earth.

4 WORST: We Can Be Heroes (Episode 10)

Supergirl Season 2 Best And Worst Episodes Ranked

Despite a big return of Livewire (Brit Morgan), the winter premiere is greatly held back because of Mon-El and Kara’s constant disagreements. At this point in the season, Kara was still actively training Mon-El as a superhero, which was easier said than done.

We Can Be Heroes makes the point of how the season becomes more about Mon-El as opposed to Kara. This was, after all, just the Girl of Steel’s second year.

3 BEST: The Adventures of Supergirl (Episode 1)

Supergirl Season 2 Best And Worst Episodes Ranked

The season premiere is pretty much a two-parter with the on-screen debut of Superman as Clark and Kara get to team-up for the first time. After having moved from CBS to The CW, the powers that be wanted to kick-off the new season to be big and super, which they accomplished.

From the Super-cousins’ awesome team-up, Lena’s introduction to the mysterious arrival of Mon-El, The Adventures of Supergirl was a busy hour. This is also where they introduce John Corben (Fredrick Schmidt) whose actions lead him to Project Cadmus as he begins his transformation to becoming Metallo.

2 WORST: Mr. & Mrs. Mxyzptlk (Episode 13)

Supergirl Season 2 Best And Worst Episodes Ranked

The thirteenth episode introduces another regular Superman foe into the Arrowverse, but not in the way you’d think. Mr. Mxyzptlk (Peter Gadiot) arrives on Earth with a twist as he is there to win Kara’s heart. Even though he is an imp from the fifth dimension, just like in the comics, this version still looks incredibly human.

Mr. & Mrs. Mxyzptlk doesn’t really do much to progress the overall story of the season and feels more like a comedic standalone episode between the famous imp and Mon-El.

1 BEST: The Last Children of Krypton (Episode 2)

Following a strong season premiere, the second episode continues the Supergirl/Superman adventures. As Corben has now become the famous Metallo, the heroes have to take on the villainous cyborg. While they do defeat him and another Metallo at the end, The Last Children of Krypton has more good stuff going for itself.

After a heated dynamic, we finally get to see Clark and J’onn bond a bit throughout the course of the episode. Another compelling element of the episode is the further exploration of Project Cadmus that serves as a regular foe for the second season. Cat (Calista Flockhart) also makes her bittersweet departure as she is ready for new challenges outside of CatCo.
