Supergirl Takes Shot at SpiderMan & Mary Janes Big Moment

Warning: SPOILERS for Supergirl Annual #2

Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson’s romance is one for the ages with an almost uncountable number of special moments between the longtime Marvel couple. However, when MJ’s first and most iconic line was tried on Supergirl in the DC universe, unlike when Peter first heard it, she wasn’t very impressed.

In Supergirl Annual #2 by Robert Venditti, Laura Braga, and Chris Sotomayor, the issue flashes back to Kara’s time on Krypton before she landed on Earth. Babysitting a young Kal-El, Kara’s secret boyfriend Rix-Zod comes over and tries to impress her upon making an entrance. Kara opens the door and Rix-Zod tells her “Face it, Kara. You just hit the jackpot.” Kara was not feeling it, asking him “how long you worked on that dumb line?” and jokingly questioning Rix-Zod on whether he think he’s “some kind of prize?” Feeling extra savage, Kara reminds him that she was the one who won the MVP at the Kryptonian Continental Championship.

The line is a clear reference to the first time Mary Jane made her first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #42. In the very last page of the book, Peter is introduced to Mary Jane, who utters her famous phrase “Face it, Tiger… You just hit the jackpot!” Clearly, the line worked because, despite their countless breakups and close calls, Peter and Mary Jane still remain one of the most beloved couples in comics.

MJ’s line continues to be repeated throughout Spider-Man’s history. Mary Jane also kept the nickname “Tiger” for Peter which has been referenced in movies, animated television shows and comic canon ever since. It’s fair to say, no non-powered hero has made such a big introduction since MJ said the famous lines.

The line doesn’t have the same effect on Kara. Despite Rix-Zod thinking he was smooth with his delivery, Kara sees right through it. Thankfully, he wasn’t terrified by her like Superman’s biggest enemy. Clearly, she’s messing with him but there’s no doubt she saw the line as corny. Perhaps, it landed the way Rix-Zod wanted to. Corny isn’t always a bad thing!

The moment will always be a big part of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s history. It won’t suddenly be the same for Kara and Rix-Zod. But, that’s the point. It pokes fun at the biggest romance in comics since Kara and Rix-Zod’s relationship will be short and fun. Kudos to Rix-Zod for trying the line, but if anybody can see through it, it’s Supergirl – even if she’s not fully super, yet.
