Superman How DC One Million Made the Man of Steel Stronger Than Ever

Superman is, without a doubt, one of the most powerful heroes in the DC Universe. The Man of Steel has just about everything a superhero could ask for super-strength, speed, heat vision, invulnerability and an endless array of other abilities. From his wacky Silver Age power-set to the toned-down, Post-Crisis Superman, The Man of Tomorrow has proven his immense potential time and again. Being the good-natured Kansas boy that he is, Clark Kent isn’t always keen to show off his full strength. Still, Superman is capable of some tremendous feats. One version of Superman, however, is so powerful that he’s the living embodiment of the sun.

It’s important to preface Superman’s most powerful form with some of Kal-El’s most impressive feats. For example, in Action Comics #553, by Marv Wolfman and Gil Kane, Vandal Savage sent a large group of mysterious power pyramids across the Earth. After dispatching the other pyramids, Superman discovered the last one was placed at the beginning of time, wreaking havoc with all of existence. Going back in time, Superman fought his way through the big bang itself to destroy this pyramid and save the timeline. Surviving the creation of the universe is no small task.

Additionally, in the classic Superman #247, by Elliot Maggin, Curt Swan, and Murphy Anderson, Superman had to stop a dangerous pod of spores heading to Earth. Severely weakened, due to the red sun nearby, Superman still managed to move an entire planet to block the spores. Although this nearly killed him, Superman still performed a massively impressive feat.

Even under mind control, Superman is tremendously powerful. In the Superman/Batman tale, “Torment,” by Alan Burnett, Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs, DeSaad teamed with the Scarecrow to control Superman’s mind. Sent to The Source Wall to free Darkseid, Superman managed to pull Highfather’s staff from this seemingly immutable barrier.

All of these actions pale in comparison, of course, to the power of “Superman Prime.” Existing in an alternate future, within the pages of Grant Morrison and Val Semekis’ DC: One Million, this incarnation of The Man of Steel was at his most powerful form ever. Near the end of the twenty-first century, Superman mourned for the loss of all the loved ones whom he’d outlived.

The Man of Tomorrow decided to journey out into the stars, leaving his responsibilities to a new generation of Superman, the “Superman Secundus.” Superman traveled until the 700th century, acquiring a wide range of new abilities and skills from all across the universe. Upon his return, Superman promised to share his power with his descendants, an ability not previously seen.

Afterward, The Man of Tomorrow went into his fortress, nesting within the “Super-Sun.” Inside the sun, The Man of Steel spent fifteen thousand years absorbing solar energy, super-charging his powers to infinite levels, resulting in his radiant glow. Near the end of DC: One Million, Superman Prime came out of hibernation, helping Green Lantern and the new Superman, Kal Kent, against the tyrant sun, Solaris.

This super-charged Man of Tomorrow, when hit with a Kryptonite bullet, felt nothing, demonstrating immunity to the green rock. Superman used a Green Lantern ring to crush Solaris once and for all, ending the fight. Going even further, Superman Prime used the DNA in Solaris’ core to resurrect Lois Lane, reuniting with a silver version of his great love.
