Superman is Using Magic To Replace His Lost Superpowers

Warning: contains spoilers for Action Comics #1036!

With his powers on the wane in recent months, Superman has turned to other sources, including magic, to boost his strength, a fact which he’s largely kept secret. In Action Comics #1036, the Man of Steel and the Authority arrive on War World, ready to liberate its enslaved masses from the despot Mongul—but Mongul knows Superman’s secret!

Not only has Superman had to contend with fluctuating power levels, but after hearing the atrocities Mongul has been perpetrating on War World, takes it upon himself to free the countless billions imprisoned on the hellish planet. In the recently concluded mini-series Superman and the Authority, the Man of Steel begins assembling a new incarnation of the venerable team; this new version includes classic members Apollo and Midnighter fighting alongside newcomers Natasha Irons, Manchester Black, and the Enchantress. At the conclusion of the series, Superman revealed to his new team their true purpose: they were going to help him free the citizens of War World. After helping Batman turn back an invasion from the Dark Multiverse, Superman and the Authority took off for War World, and they arrive in Action Comics #1036, written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, with art by Daniel Sampere, colors by Adriano Lucas, and letters by Dave Sharpe.

As Superman and the Authority draw closer to their destination, it is clear Mongul knew they were on the way, confirmed by the crucified corpse left as a warning as well as the massive flare shaped like Superman’s shield coming from War World. Superman, his resolve strengthened even further, bursts into Mongul’s throne room, declaring his intent to free the planet’s citizens. He is then attacked by Mongul—who exposes the secret of his power loss. Manchester Black confirms this and reveals the Enchantress has been using her magic to help Superman with his strength levels, and Black himself has been using his illusion powers to create the image of a strong, vital Superman.

Current readers of the Superman titles have known for months about his powers, but he has been keeping it a secret from the rest of the DC Universe, and even his own team—only the Enchantress and Manchester Black knew. Superman felt the need to maintain appearances in order to convince Mongul he was a legitimate threat—however, the warlord saw right through it, forcing Superman and his allies to rethink their strategy. Superman also felt using magic, the only other thing besides Kryptonite that can truly hurt him, was important to keeping up appearances, so much so he is allowing the Enchantress to prop his strength up. Likewise, Superman had to ally himself with illusion caster Manchester Black, whose snarly, anti-authoritarian impulses puts him at odds with the Man of Steel.

In order to save the citizens of War World from the despotic Mongul, Superman is using magic for probably the first time in his career. While it is not known how much longer he can sustain this, for now it is giving him his edge.
