Superman Just Discovered More Survivors of Krypton

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Action Comics #1031

In the latest issue of DC’s Action Comics, Superman has seemingly saved a prisoner ship containing Kryptonian survivors. This is huge, considering how there are only a handful of Kryptionians still alive after Superman’s homeworld of Krypton was destroyed. The existence of more Kryptonians would certainly be a rather large development for the DC Universe, though it’s possible that there’s more going on with these survivors than meets the eye.

In recent issues of Action Comics, it’s been revealed that Superman’s cells are in a state of possible decay consistent with radiation poisoning. At the moment, this is something only Batman and Superman know, along with Ray Palmer’s Atom, as they were the ones to run the tests on the Man of Steel. Additionally, Superman’s son Jon has been growing continually paranoid that his father will somehow die, as the present has now progressed beyond the detailed records Jon saw during his time in the future. Apparently, the records were unclear and divided about what happens next, with conflicting reports about Superman’s eventual death (or if he even dies at all). Furthermore, the cosmic conqueror known as Mongul has been monitoring Superman, and he also suspects that the Man of Steel is weak.

This all leads up to the new Action Comics #1031 from writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist Daniel Sampere, which sees Superman and Superboy intercepting battleships from Mongul’s Warworld that are firing upon their own ship containing refugees. Once Superman hears one of them speaking ancient Kryptonian with a brand on her hand bearing the House of El sigil, he immediately determines to get them all to safety, hoping that they’re all survivors of his homeworld. However, it’s very possible that these survivors could be a trojan horse, playing upon Superman’s motivations to be a hero as well as his failure to save the lost city of Kandor, the Kryptontian city that was shrunken and bottled by the villain Brainiac.

After Superman and Jon save the refugees, they take them to the Fortress of Solitude to receive rest and treatment from their long list of illnesses, parasites, malnourishment, and wounds that never healed. Cleary, they’ve all been horribly mistreated on Warworld, and Superman, Supergirl, and Superboy start looking for answers, trying to understand who they are and if they’re really Kryptonian. Superboy in particular seems confident that this is all a sinister ruse by Mongul, and it doesn’t seem like he’s wrong. The end of the issue reveals a flashback, seeing the refugee who spoke Kryptonian being branded with Superman’s symbol by Mongul himself, and it looks as though he’s intentionally sent her and her fellow prisoners to Earth to specifically come into contact with the Man of Steel, most likely to take advantage of his weakness.

Regardless of their status as true Kryptonians, these refugees are clearly being used by Mongul in his plot against Superman, and it’s possible that the whole point was for Superman to let his guard down by having him think that they were his own kind. After all, they’re now within Fortress of Solitude unsupervised. They could certainly do a lot of damage if they wanted to, though it seems as though they don’t have any choice in the matter as Mongul has threatened to kill all of their people should this primary refugee fail in the mission he’s given her. There’s clearly more to the story for Superman and his family to uncover, and hopefully they can get to the bottom of it all before Mogul and Warworld are ready to strike in future issues.
