Superman & Lois 5 Things It Should Take From Man Of Steel (& 5 Ways It Should Be Different)

There’s a lot of debate over who portrayed the mighty Man of Steel the best. The current big-screen iteration of the character has met some controversy in the past, but has a series of great moments from throughout the DCEU. Superman’s original movie, Man Of Steel, is still considered to be one of the best in Warner Brother’s new series.

However, while Henry Cavill may have garnered a lot of critical acclaim, so too has Tyler Hoechlin who will finally be getting his own show alongside Elizabeth Tulloch’s Lois Lane. Superman & Lois will be joining the Arrowverse very soon, but for it to really take off it needs to learn a number of lessons from the character’s on-screen past. What can this new show take from Man Of Steel and where should it break new ground?

10 Take From Man Of Steel: Portrayal Of Zod

Any comic book fan will know just how deep the personal rivalry goes between Zod and Superman. The General from Krypton was a surprisingly menacing threat in his big-screen portrayal, in large part thanks to Michael Shannon’s brilliant performance.

It will be difficult to live up to, but if the Arrowverse show is to bring in their own version of Zod, they will have to create someone just as chilling. From the character’s motivations to his no mercy attitude, this is one of the best villains of the DCEU.

9 Make It Different: The Scale

Superman has always played around with scale. Often his threats are completely Earth shattering, inspired by the pages of some of the character’s biggest and most extreme comics. The Man Of Steel and subsequent appearances of the character draw from these huge tales.

Superman & Lois can absolutely scale everything down though and play off of some of the more subtle elements of Clark’s life. The old farm on Smallville, his and Lois’ jobs in the Daily Planet and the troubles of raising a child together, are all places for emotional exploration that the movies didn’t have time to delve into.

8 Take From Man Of Steel: The Score

It’s extremely difficult to ignore Hans Zimmer’s fantastic score in Man Of Steel. Evocative, moving, original, and drawing so much inspiration from all of the Superman music that has come before, Zimmer’s work was completely inspiring.

If Superman & Lois can capture even an essence of that magic in its own music then they will surely be on to a winner. After all, music has really come to epitomize the symbol of hope that the Man of Steel has become. Perhaps this score can also honor back to both old eras and new.

7 Make It Different: The Costume

Man Of Steel has created a big debate surrounding one very important aspect of the cinematic experience. Specifically, Superman’s costume on the big screen. Iconic elements like the red underpants have been taken away completely.

The colors have been muted and the textures have been changed drastically. The Arrowverse has its own unique take on Superman’s costume and it should continue to follow its own path. Trying to copy or take something from the big screen version is only going to cause more controversy or undo some of the great work done on TV.

6 Take From Man Of Steel: Moral Questions

Zack Snyder’s Man Of Steel did manage to cram in some huge moral questions as to Superman’s role in the bigger picture. A man with so many abilities could almost be considered to be a god. That surely doesn’t sit well with humanity.

Supergirl also played around with some of these complex questions and it will be interesting to see the Arrowverse’s Superman take on some of these larger issues. How will the world react with Superman’s return to the main stage?

5 Make It Different: The Tone

The big-screen version of Superman, until recently, has been quite grim and gritty. The Man of Tomorrow had to fit in with some of the other portrayals of these big-screen characters, in the cinematic universe that was being created.

In the Arrowverse, Superman is a much larger beacon of hope. From the colors, to some of the cheesy jokes and the over the top action, everything about the character so far has felt like a link back to the Golden Age of comics. This is a tone that should continue to be replicated in Superman & Lois.

4 Take From Man Of Steel: House Of El

The Man Of Steel very briefly took audiences to Krypton, where the House of El was shown in all its glory. The first few minutes of the movie is a beautiful spectacle that managed to explore so much about Superman’s culture and family.

Supergirl has answered a lot of questions in regards to Krypton in the Arrowvere. There are surely more stones to turn over though, as Superman searches for his own legacy and decides to meet his past head on.

3 Make It Different: The Violence

Superman is of course a hero. But he has also done a number of terrible things on the big screen. The violence and destruction that Superman causes in Man Of Steel has been a sticking point for many. His murder of Zod seemed like the final straw.

The Arrowverse version of the character wouldn’t be able to carry off this level of violence. There’s certainly not a right or wrong way, since every artist and filmmaker has a different vision. For the small screen Superman though, a more family friendly level of action would be more appropriate.

2 Take From Man Of Steel: Lois’ Role

Lois Lane has been slightly reinvented on the big screen. She’s usually been a journalist of some kind, but Man Of Steel really put her in the middle of the action. Amy Adams gave a great portrayal of the character and it’s something the small screen iteration could aspire to.

Of course, there are countless stories from throughout the comics where Lane is in this kind of role. It would be great for the character to get her chance to shine on screen though, with plenty of plot lines dedicated to her investigations.

1 Make It Different: The Multiverse

The Arrowverse has something to play around with that the DCEU didn’t until very recently. It has a whole Multiverse of characters to explore. Other versions of the Man of Tomorrow are out there, in a different reality.

Perhaps some of these other takes on the character could make an appearance in the show. The Arrowverse has already had the reveal of a Kingdom Come Superman, the Man of Steel from Superman Returns and the return of the Smallville version of the character.
