Superman & Lois Fortress Of Solitude Creates A Supergirl Contradiction

Superman & Lois and Supergirl are conflicting with the Arrowverse’s version of the Fortress of Solitude post-Crisis on Infinite Earths. Prior to The CW’s game-changing crossover event, the Arrowverse was scattered with a few shows being on Earth-1, Supergirl set on Earth-38 while Black Lightning was taken place on an unspecified Earth in the Multiverse. When Oliver Queen rebooted the Multiverse, he also created Earth-Prime, the new home of all The CW heroes so they could exist in the same world. Despite being together in the same universe, Crisis on Infinite Earths also allowed the continuity to be rebooted, giving the showrunners and writers some more freedom.

While Supergirl is concluding this year, her cousin Kal-El has gotten his own series with Superman & Lois joining The CW slate. Even though they may not air at the same time, that doesn’t negate the fact that both Kara and Clark are on Earth-Prime with the rest of the Arrowverse characters. While each series is off to its own storylines and characters, there’s still the requirement to at least make sure their continuity sync up well within the larger Arrowverse. Even though Supergirl has utilized elements that are now becoming relevant for Superman & Lois, there’s one thing the two Kryptonian cousins are sharing that is not matching up in the Arrowverse.

Supergirl season 1 introduced the Fortress of Solitude that is Superman’s infamous place that allows him and Kara to connect to their Kryptonian heritage. While its visual look was most consistent in the later seasons of Supergirl, that changed with Superman & Lois. Even after Crisis, the Fortress has been frequent on Supergirl and still will be in its sixth and final season as seen in new clips and photos. However, when Clark took his son Jordan Kent to the Fortress to do some tests on what Kryptonian powers he inherited, Superman & Lois and Supergirl contradict each other. While Supergirl’s Fortress is still depicted as the traditional crystal-castle, Superman & Lois has a completely different look.

The Fortress of Solitude in Superman & Lois is not only smaller compared to Supergirl’s iteration, but its material had a completely different color and appearance. Supergirl established that one can only enter the Fortress with the special key that got condensed with Dwarf Star, making it so only a handful of people can lift it. However, the Fortress that Clark took Jordan to has a literal opening into it, making it so that anyone who is in the North Pole can enter it. It’s a big throw-off when both shows are using this location within the same timeframe. Even if the shows have different production schedules, this is all produced from the same network and through Greg Berlanti’s production company.

Both shows film in Vancouver, Canada, making it more than possible for them to use the same location or building while still maintaining continuity. There is the potential that somehow this is the same Fortress, and whenever Supergirl uses it, Kara is in a separated area or vice versa on Superman & Lois. But tonally and structurally, one doesn’t fit the other and it’s confusing how this issue has become possible for the Arrowverse. These shows use each other’s locations all the time and even relies on one another’s various buildings and items. It makes perfect sense that Superman & Lois’ set designer would want to make their own design of it, but Supergirl’s Fortress of Solitude should then look exactly the same because Kara and Clark are literally using the same sanctuary.
