Superman & Lois May Have Teased Lex Luthors Arrival

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 2, Episode 2, “The Ties That Bind,” now available on the CW.

Superman & Lois’ Season 2 premiere ended with a resounding bang as Doomsday was spotted trying to punch his way out of the Shuster Mines. It’s been affecting Tyler Hoechlin’s Clark mentally since, short-circuiting his powers as well, but as the final scene teased in the second episode, the Man of Steel might have more to worry about in the shape of Lex Luthor.

It was hinted at when AmerTek’s head, Dr. Karen Faulkner, made a sinister call to someone, boasting how her company found something in the mines wanting to come out. She cut an evil figure, maintaining it was more powerful than they ever expected, which suggested a puppet master at work.

This is the perfect entry point for Lex, with Doomsday being the perfect weapon to unleash. It’s known that Lex loves mind games, and while the show faked fans out with Steel/John Irons masquerading as Lex in Season 1 from another world, this would bring the villain’s ability to cause chaos from the shadows full circle.

Showrunner Todd Helbing has stated in the past that he’d love to work with Jon Cryer’s Lex, so maybe an iteration of that Lex, who ended Supergirl in the Arrowverse’s Phantom Zone, could return here. The show’s already bending the rules with Lucy Lane coming in with a different, non-military history, so it clearly can alter “Crisis on Infinite Earths” trying to build one world. Or it could be that Superman & Lois is back in its own pocket world as we’re seeing now with Naomi.

That aside, Lex as a businessman with his hands in AmerTek and Smallville would match how Tal-Rho hid on Earth as Morgan Edge, manipulating industries for his benefit. In this case, Lex could have heard of the X-kryptonite in the mines, wanting to exploit it for himself, only to stumble on a slumbering Doomsday. In addition, as Lt. Anderson has replaced Sam Lane in the DoD, Lex being his backer and helping create super-powered soldiers would fit Lex’s military and political ambitions from the comics, where he has been America first at times.

Ultimately, if Lex does eventually have a hand in Superman’s demise, it’d allow him to possibly clone Kal-El to create Superboy as the show is possibly angling towards “The Death of Superman” event. Either way, it’d be classic Lex, getting Doomsday to do his dirty work akin to Zack Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, while taking out the godlike being he’s always been so jealous of. This opens the door for the narcissist to then slip in as a messiah and fool everyone into thinking he’s the cure they deserve.

See how Lex Luthor has been set up to arrive as new episodes of Superman & Lois air Tuesdays at 8 pm ET/PT on The CW.
