Superman & Lois Sets Up Lana Lang Becoming The Arrowverses Superwoman

Warning: SPOILERS for Superman & Lois season 1, episode 10, “O Mother, Where Art Thou?”

Superman & Lois season 1 may have just cleverly introduced DC Comics’ Superwoman into the problem-fixing Arrowverse through Lana Lang-Cushing. The CW’s latest addition to their DC TV line-up has already had a very memorable first season with multiple twists and turns. While Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s family is at the front center of the show, Superman & Lois has also focused on other families within the Arrowverse drama. As they moved back to Smallville, Lana’s family has been a significant part of their storyline, particularly between Sarah Cushing and the Kent boys.

Throughout Superman & Lois season 1, Lois and Lana have begun to work together to find out what Morgan Edge was up to in Smallville. Following the big reveal that Morgan is actually Tal-Rho, Kal-El’s Kryptonian half older brother, things are ramping up as the first season is almost over. In the tenth episode, titled “O Mother, Where Art Thou?,” Lana volunteered to let the Eradicator machine put the mind of Superman’s biological mother, Lara, in her body. While Lara possessed her body temporarily, the Arrowverse may have secretly alluded to one of Lana’s biggest DC Comics arcs, which includes the character of Superwoman.

When The New 52 Superman died, both Lana and Lois were given certain powers because they got exposed to the energy that came out of Clark’s body. They shared the Superwoman title while having different abilities from each other. Lana had the power to produce electromagnetic energy by converting solar radiation. While Superman & Lois doesn’t have that setup, there is still a lot that is unknown about the Kryptonian technology that Superman’s mother built. Despite Lara’s explanation, the procedure’s lasting effects have been ambiguous thus far in the Arrowverse. Even though Lana was fine by the end of “O Mother, Where Art Thou?”, that doesn’t mean there couldn’t be side-effects down the line.

This would also not be the first time Lana has gotten superpowers in live-action. On Smallville, Kristin Kreuk temporarily got Clark’s powers through an accidental transfer in the seventh season. In Smallville season 8, Lana has been infused with Lex’s Prometheus suit, which gave her Kryptonian abilities. The Arrowverse’s X-Kryptonite is also another factor to consider if Lana was ever exposed to it. However, if Lana were ever to get powers from X-Kryptonite on Superman & Lois, it would be more organic if it came as a result of being exposed to Lara’s machine.

Despite Lana coming out alright at the end, it would feel a little too easy if an ordinary human was exposed to alien technology without any consequences. That is also worth considering for all the humans who Superman managed to restore to normal in “O Mother, Where Art Thou?” Even if it wouldn’t be a permanent storyline for her, seeing Lana’s Superwoman arc in the Arrowverse on Superman & Lois would be intriguing. It would let this Superman property once again do something different from other adaptations, even from Smallville, where Kreuk’s Lana had powers more than once, but not as Superwoman. With only a few episodes left in Superman & Lois season 1, time will tell if the Arrowverse is introducing Superwoman through Lana.
