Superman Returns What Lois Whispered In Clarks Ear At The End

What did Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) whisper to Clark Kent (Brandon Routh) in the hospital at the end of Superman Returns? There was a scene near the end of the 2006 movie where Lois whispers something mysterious in Clark’s ear. The film never reveals what this message was.

Directed by Bryan Singer, Superman Returns serves as a sequel to the first two Superman movies from 1978 and 1980. The film, which replaces the iconic Christopher Reeve with Brandon Routh in the role of Superman, sees the Man of Steel return to Metropolis after a five-year absence from Earth. After coming back, Superman reunites with Lois, who got married and had a child in the time that Superman was off in space. Superman also becomes embroiled in yet another conflict with Lex Luthor, who was played by Kevin Spacey in the movie.

Superman stopping Lex’s plans involved him stopping a large mass of land filled with Kryptonite from hitting the Earth. The strain of such a challenge weakened Superman to the point where he fell into a coma. Later, he was taken to a hospital where he was visited by Lois and her son, Jason (Tristan Lake Leabu). Lois approached the comatose Clark Kent and said, “I wanted to tell you that…” before whispering something in his ear. Since she followed this up with a kiss, it’s possible that Lois was simply telling Clark that she still loved him, but it’s more likely that her message was related to Jason.

Jason’s unnatural strength made it clear earlier in the movie that Superman was his real father, though Superman never saw what he was able to do. However, he apparently did know the truth about Jason’s parentage because he visited a sleeping Jason in the movie’s closing minutes. Using a variation of a speech that was spoken to him by Jor-El in Superman: The Movie, Clark said, “the son becomes the father, and the father becomes the son.”

Lois looking over her shoulder at Jason before making this mysterious confession to Clark gave the implication that her message was indeed about Jason. Clark knowing the truth at the end of the film without getting any other hints gives the impression that Lois told him that Jason is his son. As for how he could have heard this despite being in a coma, Superman Returns explained this by having Lois make a remark believing that people can hear what others are saying while in a comatose state. Given that Richard (James Marsden) was still in Jason and Lois’ life at the end of the movie, it makes sense that Clark would have kept his distance in the years that followed, but would have watched over his son to make sure he stayed safe.
