Superman Secretly Wants To Murder The Joker

Among supervillains, DC’s Joker is one of the most vile, vicious and depraved – but while Batman’s strict code prevents him from killing the Clown Prince of Crime, Superman has no such restriction. Both Batman and Superman have strict codes against killing their enemies for similar reasons (although writers have attempted to make a distinction between the two in recent years. But in Injustice: Gods Among Us Year 3 #13, written by Tom Taylor with art by Bruno Redondo, Juan Albarran and Xermaico and colors by Rex Locus, DC proves without a doubt that Superman would do what Batman will not: kill the Joker.

In the world of Injustice, Superman has become a ruthless dictator, willing to use lethal force to eliminate supervillains…and anyone who disagrees with his methods. Superman was driven to this state all because of a mad diabolical plot by the Joker, who tricked Superman into believing Lois Lane was actually Doomsday, tragically causing Clark to accidentally kill the love of his life…and her unborn child. But a recreation of this sequence in the comic tells a different story: Lois lives.

Amazingly, Lois is alive and well after being flown into space by Superman – but that only slightly tempers Superman’s wrath as he advances toward the Joker. “Move aside, Bruce” he says to Batman, inadvertently giving away his identity to the Joker. Batman takes Joker to the police station – but when the doors to the Batmobile open, Batman steps out unmasked before the public – and the Joker is dead in the passenger seat. Batman has, astoundingly, snapped his neck. The development is almost too good to be true…and unfortunately, it is.

Superman is hallucinating the entire episode; he’s been under the influence of the Black Mercy (first appearing in the famous Superman story For The Man Who Has Everything, written by Alan Moore with art by Dave Gibbons), courtesy of Batman. Dream or no dream, the plant shows victims exactly what they want to see – and what Superman wants to see is the Joker dead, Batman unmasked before the public and all is right with the world. It’s frankly stunning to see that one of Superman’s secret desires is to kill the Joker, or through inaction, let the Joker die – and lose little sleep over the thought. This has always been Superman’s dream, even before the events of Injustice.

The events of Injustice are clearly set in an alternate reality, but Superman still wrestles with his code at various points. The Joker knows that Batman will never kill him, and thus uses this to his own twisted advantage. But while Batman may stay his hand even in an alternate reality, Superman would want nothing more than to stop the Joker once and for all.
