Superman Was Redesigned To Stop DC Turning Him into a Fascist

Grant Morrison reports that DC planned on turning Superman into a “right-wing authoritarian,” but Morrison stopped that plan with a bold redesign.

The iconic Superman has always stood for American democracy and freedom, but for some odd reason, the higher-ups at DC Comics reportedly had plans to turn Clark Kent into a, “right-wing authoritarian” in his most recent redesign. This plan allegedly almost came to fruition before legendary comic book writer Grant Morrison joined the project and refused to let that happen. With Morrison’s current run of Superman, Superman and The Authority, they have successfully found a way to push Clark Kent in a new direction while still remaining true to his roots, values, and history.

In a new interview with popular pop-culture Youtuber Daniel Lee, Morrison discusses how they were asked to take over Superman’s newest redesign and that they agreed solely because, “Superman is not a right-wing authoritarian!” Instead of having Clark evolve into a tyrannical fascist, Morrison decided to make Superman the “World’s Dad,” by having him retire his position as Superman to his son Jonathan and also go on a rogue, off-world mission with a new, tougher team. In Superman and the Authority, Clark is seen gathering a large group of metahumans into a group called “The Authority,” bringing them to the vicious Warworld to take down a massive fascist, the supervillain Mongul.

This is not the first time that Morrison has spoken out against the trend of making “Evil Superman” characters throughout comics, and it seems like this interview certainly won’t be the last. When talking with Daniel Lee, Morrison reports that former DC Comics publisher Dan Didio told Grant of DC’s plans to turn Superman into a “fascist dictator,” and that after being offered free range over both Green Lantern and Superman’s next eras, Morrison decided to take on the project to save Clark from the tired, overused tyrannical overlord trope. Instead, Morrison revamped Didio’s plan to turn Clark into a fascist ruler, and instead decided to make him into “The Dad,” stating they were was “tricked” into returning to write for Superman comics.

In Superman and The Authority, Clark Kent has recently been removed from the Justice League and found out that Mongul has enslaved the entire population of the distant Warworld. Grant Morrison has used this plot as a way to still create a more authority-driven Superman, one whose powers are waning, while remaining authentic to the classic character. In talking with Lee, Morrison said that they wanted to make Superman, “An outlaw, but not a bad guy, you know?” Morrison had this to say about how they convinced DC of the new direction for Clark:

“If you’d let me do a version of Superman where he’s like, a Dad, who’s having to lay down the law sometimes but at the same time he’s only doing it for the best reasons.” The author of All-Star Superman continued, saying, “You know, he’s trying to be ‘the Dad,’ I said. “If you let me do that version of Superman please don’t make him a right-wing tyrant guy, that’s just not Superman.”

There are more than enough “Evil Superman” clones throughout comics right now, such as Homelander from The Boys and Omni-Man from Invincible, so it is encouraging to see such a well-known comic book creator advocating hard for the original Superman to stay close to his authentic self. With The “Warworld Saga” in full swing over in Action Comics, and Clark seemingly defeated by Mongul in the latest issue, it seems like Grant Morrison is trying their hardest to create an impactful new era for the Man of Steel. Hopefully this will prevent future DC Comics publishers from turning Superman into a tyrant anytime in the near future.
