Superman Was Responsible for DCs Version of the MCUs Blip

DC’s Superman caused a version of the MCU’s blip within his universe. This event, known as “the Vanishing”, began in Superman #204 from 2004. It lasted for twelve issues and was told over the course of a year. Ultimately, it was revealed that Superman was responsible for the sudden disappearance of at least one million people – including his own wife.

In the MCU, the “blip” is the result of Thanos’ snap with the Infinity Gauntlet. This action caused half of the world’s population to disappear. Eventually the Avengers are able to bring everyone back, but Thanos was the source. In an older, but similar story involving the Man of Steel, there were multiple “Vanishings”, with the first involving one million people.

Superman #204 by Brian Azzarello, Jim Lee, and Scott Williams begins the “For Tomorrow” arc. It begins with the Man of Steel talking to a priest about his experience fighting to end a country’s war. This arc lasts until Superman #215. By the end of this arc, He has realized that his own attempts to save the Earth led to the Vanishing and he tries to right the wrongs he mistakenly created. Superman also undoes the Vanishing and finds out exactly how his perfect vision went wrong.

Through the course of this arc, it is revealed that Lois asked Superman what he would do if Earth were to suffer the same fate as Krypton. She asks if he would repeat the actions of his father, Jor-El, and build a rocket ship for their child. In response, the Man of Steel creates his own version of paradise using the Phantom Zone. He has a “key” which is an orb, and robots made in the image of his Kryptonian parents that serve as caretakers of the world. However, after creating it, Superman realizes he has overstepped his bounds. As a result, he sends the orb, or the “Vanishing device”, to the world itself, to lock it away and he removes the memory from his own mind – making it the ultimate secret.

This would have remained a secret were it not for General Zod being trapped within the Phantom Zone. The first Vanishing was a result of the supervillain finding the orb and using it as he began to build his own empire. This is what resulted in Lois disappearing as part of the first million. A second Vanishing occurred when Superman first confronted Equus, a cyborg mercenary debuting in this arc, who ends up in Superman’s paradise world. A final one occurs when Superman sends himself out of the world he knows to find out where everyone disappeared to. After discovering his ultimate secret and realizing that he made a mistake in his approach to saving the world, he sends everyone back to his original world using the Vanishing device – before destroying his paradise.

While not one of the most popular arcs in Superman’s history, this is a potent one that forces the Man of Steel to evaluate the importance of new beginnings being born from endings. It also provides a moment of self-reflection as he realizes that Krypton’s ending led to his beginning. Yet it also shows a darker side of consequences that can occur when Superman tries to find a perfect solution for saving the day. Having the ability to do something, doesn’t mean it should be done. The MCU’s blip was caused by a supervillain seeking balance, but DC’s was caused by Superman trying to avoid repeating the history of his homeworld – and neither was correct in what they did.
