Supermans Dumbest Movie Power Is From The Comics (Sort Of)

Christopher Reeve’s Superman remains one of the most iconic performances ever in superhero films ever. Reeves perfectly embodied the Man of Steel in four different Superman films. With that said, the Superman movies featured some questionable moments – like the time Clark Kent made Lois Lane forget his secret identity with a super-kiss.

Superman II (1981) was somewhat controversial, as director Richard Donner, who helmed the first Superman film, was fired after the movie was nearly done being shot. Richard Lester took over as director and made some key changes – that would later be erased in Donner’s more recent cut of the film. One of the biggest changes Lester made was shooting an all-new ending that featured Clark Kent consoling Lois Lane after she’s upset about finding out his true identity as Superman. Inexplicably, Clark kisses Lois Lane, which wipes her mind. At first glance, it might seem like Lester gave Superman powers that he’s never had, but the super-kiss did happen in the comics.. sort of.

In Action Comics #306 (1963) by Robert Bernstein and Al Plastino, the issue opens up with Clark, Lois, and Perry White at a Daily Planet Christmas party. Perry encourages Clark to stand under the mistletoe since he’s the only person who hasn’t so far. Standing under the mistletoe, Lois tells Clark that she’s going to kiss him “as if you were Superman.” Clark decides to teach Lois a lesson by giving her a “super-kiss.” Surprising the Daily Planet’s surrounding staff, Clark gives Lois a major smooch under the mistletoe. Once the kiss ends, Lois struggles to stay on her feet, as she’s dizzied by the kiss. “Yes, for a while I thought you were — er — some – one else! Where’d you pick up that technique?” Lois asks Clark. “Maybe it’s sort of a hidden talent! After all, you don’t know everything about me,” Clark responds.

The moment ends with Clark thinking “Lois would pass out if she knew it was Superman, my other identity, who kissed her!”

While the ‘super-kiss’ didn’t erase Lois’ memories (which is incredibly messed up when you think about it), it did have a noticeable effect on Lois. She was completely mystified about the kiss and nearly passed out. Superman’s super-kiss was even too powerful for Lois to fully withstand. It’s a bizarre moment and thankfully, Clark’s kissing powers haven’t been frequently revisited on film or in the comics.
