Supermans First Manga Sees The Man of Steel Grab Lunch in Japan

As Superman is about to have his first manga adventure, he’s flying to Japan for lunch. The series is promising to explore the culture and atmosphere that contrasts the Man of Steel’s regular Metropolis setting.

In recent years, many superheroes have crossed over into manga, with Batman and the rest of the Justice League being a few notable examples from the DC Universe. The art style and similarly characteristic storylines have often been favored by fans, as familiar heroes have a chance to be lightly reimagined. While fan art has frequently imagined Superman and other iconic heroes in alternate art styles, he hasn’t received the authentic manga treatment for a fully realized story before. However, this is changing with a comic that previously made headlines, and is now confirmed to be released.

Announced by DC Comics on Twitter, Superman is getting the manga treatment with Superman vs. Meshi. The series written by Satoshi Miyakawa with art by Kai Kitago is being published through Kodansha Publishers, known for titles such as Attack On Titan and The Quintessential Quintuplets among many others. The first issue, “Superman’s Solo Lunch” is available now in Japan, which is where Superman appears to be based on the released cover. The Man of Tomorrow is pictured holding a bowl of rice with chopsticks in hand, evidently a fan of Japanese cuisine.

Food might seem like a mundane thing to be such a focus on a cover, but here it is representative of a lifestyle that isn’t often depicted in the DC Universe. Theoretically, Superman could fly anywhere in the world for a meal at a moment’s notice, going from Italy to China to Japan. Depending on what the Kent family is in the mood for, there is no shortage of dinner options. Similar to the Flash, Superman’s powers give him the benefit of ordering from an extensive menu. Often, Superman has been depicted as knowing many languages, allowing him to be an ambassador of sorts with other nations. Assuming this take on the Man of Steel is familiar with Japanese, he is a prime candidate for a storyline set outside of America.

At the moment, there are no confirmed plans regarding the series being translated to English. Given that DC Comics posted this announcement on Twitter, the publisher could be testing the waters with whether there is a demand from English-speaking readers. Based on the tweet’s activity, there seems to be a strong chance that a translation is just around the corner. Previous DC manga comics have received English versions, which makes it seem all the more likely. As the Man of Steel visits Japan in Superman vs. Meshi, readers who live outside of the country could learn about the cuisine.
