Whether it’s baking a pie or decapitating a vampire, the matriarch of the Winchester family has been one of the most influential characters in the Supernatural universe. Hers is the very first voice ever to be heard, and it’s her death that starts the plot of the entire series.
It’s not only that her character is the reason there is a show to speak of, but her sacrifice kept the world from becoming the post-apocalyptic desert glimpsed in season 13. Even after her death, fans have had the privilege of getting to know the character over the years. Here’s a look at some of her best appearances.
10 Good Intentions
After Jack makes the journey to the apocalypse world to find her, Michael’s army throws him in a cell with Mary. Together, the two devise a plan to escape and seek refuge in Bobby’s camp, where he has been leading an army of rebels. She fights for Jack to be allowed to stay in the camp, despite his being a dangerous creature.
Mary’s interactions with Jack show a caring, nurturing side of her that hadn’t been fully explored the previous season, especially since she didn’t return to the show until her two sons were fully grown. She had proven herself as a skilled hunter, but her role in this episode helps to round out her character.
9 Exodus
After spending the whole season trying to get back to them, Mary is reunited with her sons in the apocalypse world. She also punches Lucifer in the face—for the second time!
While Sam and Dean had traveled to the apocalypse world with the intention of only bringing back their mom and Jack, it’s because of Mary and her commitment to helping Bobby’s team of rebels that they end up saving the entire group, including Maggie and the new world’s Charlie, and taking them back to the main world, too.
8 Damaged Goods
With Michael tenuously trapped in his mind, as Dean spends what he believes to be his last couple of days of his life on Earth, he drives up to Donna’s cabin in Minnesota where Mary is staying. Mary, although not much of a cook, makes Winchester Surprise, a greasy “heart attack on a plate” she dreamt up when Dean was a kid. The two spend the evening eating, laughing, and telling each other stories.
Later, though, she discovers the Ma’lak box Dean intends to trap himself and Michael in. She is captured by Nick, who forces her to take him to and open an Enochian puzzle box where she had trapped the demon who killed his family, and manages to subdue him with the help of her boys and Donna.
7 First Blood
After she stepped away from her family while she adjusts to the new world, Castiel informs Mary that Sam and Dean had been captured by federal agents while going after Lucifer and protecting Kelly Kline, who is carrying the archangel’s baby. Blaming herself for not being there to help, she sets out to find them.
When Castiel calls her with news that he had gotten a call from Dean, they join their efforts to rescue them. They reunite with the brothers in Colorado, only to find that they had made a deal with Billie in order to escape the prison. Rather than let one of her sons die, Mary agrees to fulfill the deal herself, almost sacrificing her own life before Castiel kills the reaper.
6 The British Invasion
While Mary’s is not a huge role in this episode, what is shown shines a light on her life outside of her boys. She has been hunting with Ketch, and the two end up having sex, the first time she is shown to be intimate with anyone since John. It’s a side of her that definitely contributes to the allure of the ladies of Supernatural.
When Ketch comments that she has been doing a good job of distancing herself from her family in favor of her work, which the two had discussed in a previous episode, she makes it clear that she is not choosing hunting over them. Instead, she is both a mom and someone working to make the world safer. She’s adamant that she shouldn’t need to choose between the two.
5 Nightmare Logic
For the first time, the show sparks the idea of Mary and a real romance with someone other than John. She had a brief fling with Ketch but the two agreed it would be nothing more than sex. The episode explores the relationship between Mary and Bobby, whom she met in the apocalypse world. The two are hunting together when her sons start working the same case.
Sam comments that the pair’s relationship seems to have developed quite a bit, and Mary relates to him that she is in unfamiliar territory with Bobby, that he is different and more closed-off than Sam’s father as she used to know him, before admitting with a laugh that she probably shouldn’t be talking about this with her son.
4 Who We Are
Mary’s brainwashing, along with the British Men of Letters’ residence in America, comes to a close in this episode. After being manipulated against her sons and forced to kill other hunters in the Brits’ efforts to convert her back into the detached hunter she once was, her boys force Toni to bring their mother back.
Dean enters Mary’s mind, where he discovers she has been trapped in what she considers to be her perfect world: a time before she was killed by Azazel, with a 4-year-old Dean and a newborn Sam, whom she had been mourning since her return. In the end, Dean convinces her to come back to them and start over, and she shoots Ketch in the head.
3 Mamma Mia
This episode finds Mary newly back from the dead. After being introduced to her suddenly grown-up son Dean and his friend Castiel, an actual angel, the team sets out to find Sam, who had been kidnapped by a rogue British Men of Letters’ operative, Toni.
Mary’s efforts to save her son have a backdrop of her struggles adjusting to the new world, which would later culminate into her stepping back from the boys. The episode ends with her and her sons having dinner in the bunker, complete with pie, exchanging their elation at being reunited again.
2 In The Beginning
To teach him a lesson in fate, Castiel takes Dean back to where it all started: 1973. It’s the first episode that gives fans a glimpse of Mary’s life before she became the “Mother Mary” she has been known as until then. Dean discovers that she was a hunter, that she came from a family of hunters, the Campbells, and how much she wanted to leave the hunting life.
Thinking Dean to be a fellow hunter and nothing more, she relates to him that she wants to be safe, that she doesn’t want to raise her children to be hunters. The episode also illustrates how an impossible situation caused her to make a deal with Azazel, a decision that would one day kill her and kickstart the plot of the entire show.
1 All Along The Watchtower
Back with her sons after her run-in with the Men of Letters, the team tracks down Kelly Kline and Castiel, all of them anxiously awaiting the birth of Lucifer’s child. She helps Kelly through the birth, and the two share a few bittersweet sentiments about motherhood, one of the most touching moments she shares with another female character.
When Jack is born, leaving Kelly dead, Mary joins the fight against Lucifer alongside her sons and gets to fulfill her lifelong dream of punching the devil in the face (for the first time)! The end of the episode sees her trapped in the apocalypse world with Lucifer.
