Anyone who has watched Supernatural knows about demons, those pesky evil spirits who are constantly getting in the Winchesters’ way. From crossroad demons, to Crowley the King of Hell, to Asmodeus the fourth Prince of Hell, there is a lot to know about these tortured souls. Every culture and religion have their own beliefs and theories on demons, but everyone can agree these are not entities you want to mess with.

While many fans of Supernatural believe they are demon experts after watching the Winchesters battle with the nasty buggers, they forget that demons are masters at keeping secrets. Here are 10 things even diehard fans don’t know about demons:

10 Asmodeus is the King of the Nine Levels of Hell

In Supernatural, Asmodeus is depicted as one of the seven princes of Hell, but thanks to Dante’s Inferno, some religions believe he has another role. To Renaissance Christians, he was the king of the nine levels of Hell. Each layer has a different ruler, and Asmodeus is the ruler over the ninth plane, which made him king of the nine levels. This makes Asmodeus the most powerful archdevil.

He was also not one to be easily mistaken as he was often depicted as a thirteen-foot tall man with black hair, red eyes, and horns. It was also believed that he was covered in bleeding wounds underneath his kingly clothes. This is quite the contrast from the Asmodeus in Supernatural.

9 There are Nine Archdevils

Fans of Supernatural know all about the archangels, but what about the archdevils? Archdevils are similar to archangels except they fight for the opposite team. Asmodeus is one of the nine archdevils as he is a ruler of the ninth plane in Hell. There are eight other archdevils and each one is a ruler over one of the planes of Hell.

The other eight include starting at the first plane: Zariel, Dispater the Iron Duke, Mammon the Viscount, Lady Fierna/Archduke Belial, Prince Levistus, The Archduchess Glasya, Baalzebul the Slug Archduke, and Mephistopheles. That’s quite the entourage for Asmodeus.

8 The Seven Princes of Hell Represent the Seven Deadly Sins

According to Peter Binsfeld, a German bishop and theologian who lived in the 1500s, each of the seven princes of Hell represents one of the seven deadly sins. He believed Lucifer represented pride, Mammon is greed, Asmodeus is lust, Leviathon is envy, Beelzebub is gluttony, Satan is wrath, and Belphegor represented sloth.

However, many in Christian based religions disagree with Peter Binsfield as there is no scripture to back up what he declared. He published his theory in 1589. Binsfield was very active in the anti-protestant Catholic activities, and he was also a prominent witch hunter of his time.

7 Demons are Fallen Angels

In Supernatural, many demons, including Crowley, were once human, but this goes against what most religions believe. Many religions, mostly Christian based ones, believe demons are the fallen angels who were cast out of Heaven along with Lucifer.

These angels choose to rebel against God, which led to their great fall. God gave them the free will to make this decision, but there are always consequences to actions. Since these angels, now demons, choose to be aligned with Lucifer, they now do his bidding and try to tempt humans into committing sins. They may have fallen, but they were not caged.

6 Humans are Not Demons

Humans may be able to become evil spirits once they pass on, but they do not become demons as demons are a completely separate species. In the Bible it states that evil humans, such as the greedy man named Lazarus, go to Hades, the invisible holding place, after death to await the final judgment.

If humans are not automatically sent to Hell which is the home of demons, then they cannot become demons after death. Humans and demons are completely different species just like angels and humans. Humans cannot become celestial beings after death as it is not believed to be their reason for creation.

5 Hellhounds are Not as Vicious as They are Made Out to Be

Supernatural would have you believe that hellhounds are vicious, killing machines who leave a bloody trail wherever they go, but this is not the case according to many folklores. In mythology, hellhounds rarely attack humans unless they are provoked like most dogs. Some cultures believe hellhounds are simply reapers who guide souls to the afterlife and guard them against other monsters trying to take the soul.

They can also be protectors of soul, often lurking around cemeteries. Other folklore indicates they are merely gatekeepers for the underworld, patrolling crossroads. Some legends state they are “Bearers of Death” and were created by ancient demons as heralds or messengers of death. Either way seeing one is never a good omen.

4 What Hellhounds Look Like

While hellhounds are not necessarily the ravenous creatures Supernatural makes them out to be, they are still a scary sight to behold. Supernatural has never full shown a hellhound, and maybe it’s because they are quite terrifying to gaze upon.

Most folklore states hellhounds have pitch-black greasy fur with glowing red eyes. Some myths believe the hellhound or Black shuck, the Old English myth, is headless or only has one eye. Hellhounds also scorch the ground where they walk, leaving a fiery trail behind them. They also possess super strength and speed, if people weren’t already scared enough.

3 The Church of Satan Does Not Believe in Demons or Satan

Many people tend to think Satanists worship Satan and demons, but in facts the LaVeyan Satanists believe demons and Satan to be myths. They also believe God and angels are make-believe. Satanists use Satan and demonic symbols as a way to represent their rebellion against Christianity.

The core of the Satanist religion is self-dependence, not relying on any higher power. They used upside-down crosses and read the Lord’s prayer backward as a way to mock Christians. The Satanic Temple states it believes superstition should not be apart of religion, so they do not believe in anything supernatural, including demons.

2 There is a Christmas Demon

Many people think of Santa Claus or St. Nick during the holidays, which is jolly and full of goodness. But where there is good, there is also evil. Krampus is the demon of Christmas who is described as a half-goat, half-demon creature. While St. Nick, who is the patron saint of children in the Catholic belief, rewards good behavior by giving gifts to well-behaved children, Krampus punishes the misbehaving kids.

Krampus takes discipline to a whole new level as he beats children into being good and hauls them off to his lair in his bag. There are tales of a black-bearded man named Belsnickle or Knecht Ruprecht who carry switches to beat kids. Where there is light, there is darkness. It’s a balance.

1 Crowley is the Wickedest Man in The World

Crowley is everyone’s favorite demon in Supernatural. Many fans would probably love the idea of a real-world Crowley. Well good news, there is! Aleister Crowley, born Edward Alexander Crowley, is quite real. He lived from 1875 to 1947 in England and was dubbed the wickedest man in the world as he was quite a rebel in his time.

Aleister Crowley was a drug user, bisexual, and created his own religion: Thelema, which is definitely not a Christian based religion. His mission was to bring Paganism back in a purer form, and he was known as being a magician and occultist who rejected fundamental Christianity, much like the demon Crowley.
