Supernatural 10 Things That Make No Sense About the Winchesters

For many seasons, Sam and Dean Winchester have proven that they are able to deal with almost any foe, no matter how powerful the foe may be. They have fought alongside other hunters and welcomed more people into the family business of saving people and hunting things.

Throughout all of their challenges, the brothers have a bond that can’t be broken even if one becomes soulless for a time (Sam) or one becomes extremely violent after wearing the mark of Cain (Dean). However, there are still things that don’t make sense about the Supernatural brothers.

10 Not Adding to John’s Journal

Supernatural 10 Things That Make No Sense About the Winchesters

At the beginning of the series, John left his journal behind for the brothers, to help them continue the family business. They relied on it often, looking up information about previous cases that John did and learning tips about how to kill or maim monsters. Now, in many ways the brothers have surpassed their father in the amount of knowledge that they have obtained.

Yet, they aren’t keeping with the tradition of writing the information down for other hunters or their adopted son, Jack. It doesn’t make sense that they aren’t continuing its use, especially since it was so important to them and that they could help others by recording what they know.

9 Their Inconsistent Treatment of Kevin

Kevin Tran, prophet, does become family to both of the brothers over time. At first, he is someone that they need to protect, and then someone whom they mourn. However, the brothers are inconsistent in how they treat Kevin. When Dean goes to Purgatory, Sam doesn’t answer his phone, and so Sam doesn’t help Kevin at all.

Later, Dean calls Sam out on this behavior. Yet, when they are protecting Kevin, Dean comes to see him only when Dean needs something, not to check on him. This inconsistency doesn’t make sense, especially for two characters who have such high morals and purpose. Add to this, a possessed Sam (by Gadreel) kills him complicates it more.

8 Not Being Injured or Scarred That Much

For the amount of physical violence that the brothers endure, they should be more injured or scarred. Aside from a few serious instances, both brothers escape horrible ordeals with hardly a hair out of place. Fans did learn that part of this has been that Chuck/God was on their side, meaning that they were less injured than the standard human.

Still, even in this current season, they aren’t injured. True, a minor god gave them luck, but even with that, they should still have a broken bone or two.

7 Lack of Remorse Over Other Family Members’ Deaths

Sam and Dean feel a lot for their mother and father. They also have remorse over friends who are like family to them, such as Bobby. However, they meet their Campbell cousins, all of whom died. One of the Campbell cousins, Gwen, was actually killed by Dean when he was infected by a Khan Worm. While he felt bad in the episode, there appears to be little to no lingering effect.

Sam is no better. He actually kills Dean’s Amazon daughter. True, she may have tried to complete the ritual and kill Dean, but it was still a little uncertain. Added to this, Sam feels no remorse about killing his niece and just ridicules Dean for not being able to do it himself.

6 Not Exploring Their Family History More

Sam and Dean learn of their very unique history: Their mother came from a long line of hunters (the Campbells) and their father came from a line of Men-of-Letters scholars (the Winchesters). A cupid specifically put Mary and John together so that Sam and Dean could exist. This combination was to make them stronger and more capable.

However, the brothers are only mildly interested in the background. They haven’t really explored it in depth, not even Sam who is curious and a scholar.

5 Not Being Hunted Much

Aside from Sam being hunted when he was a psychic/demon-child, the brothers are largely left alone. They have angered many monsters, which would make one think that they would be constantly dodging enemies. While that has happened a little, it hasn’t happened as often as it should considering their line of work and reputation.

In almost 15 Seasons, they haven’t been pursued that often, which doesn’t make sense. John was pursued more, and he knew less than his sons.

4 Not Rescuing Adam

Supernatural 10 Things That Make No Sense About the Winchesters

Adam, their half-brother, was left in Lucifer’s cage after he became Michael’s vessel. Dean fought to get Sam out. Initially, Dean was told that he could only have one brother out, and he chose Sam. Then seasons and seasons later, the brothers didn’t try to rescue their half-brother nor did they seem to think of him. In Season 10, the musical episode, this is actually made fun of in the last song, “Carry on Wayward Son.”

Adam only gets out In Season 15 after a series of events opens the cage, and he strikes a deal with Michael. For Sam and Dean, where family is supposed to be everything, not rescuing Adam or even thinking about Adam makes no sense.

3 Disappearing Powers

Both the brothers were chosen as the vessels for Lucifer and Michael due to their strength and abilities. Dean was supposed to be the perfect vessel for Michael, yet Adam easily took that role, making fans wonder how special was Dean really? Even more confusing, Sam had powers that were almost-magical.

He could see the future, move things with his mind, and force demons out of the human bodies that they possessed. Supposedly, all of these powers are gone now. However, fans have wondered if those powers are still there, but dormant.

2 Take Freedom-of-Choice Away from Others

Supernatural 10 Things That Make No Sense About the Winchesters

The brothers speak highly of freedom-of-choice. When they have met “monsters,” sometimes the brothers give the monsters another chance, telling them it is their choice and “keep [their] nose clean.”

Yet, they have also taken that freedom away from others. Dean had Castiel wipe all memories of him from Lisa and Ben’s minds, and Sam rejected potential loves before they could find out the truth about him–not letting them choose to be with him or not.

1 Mixed Message: Self-Sacrificing and Selfish

The brothers have sacrificed a lot for the world, no doubt there. Yet, they are also selfish, not understanding others’ emotions. At first, Dean doesn’t understand Kevin’s need to make sure that his mom is fine. Sam doesn’t understand why they need to drop everything and save Donna’s niece.

Luckily, the brothers can call out each other when needed. Luckily, both haven’t been selfish at the same time. If they had been, this story wouldn’t have lasted for 15 seasons.
