With fifteen seasons under its belt, Supernatural has one of the largest catalogs of TV characters out there. The Winchester brothers and Team Free Will make many allies who either become part of the family or at least help out in specific hunts and storylines. However, just because certain characters are heroic (Sam and Dean are obvious choices) or have good hearts, that does not mean fans like and enjoy them.

The same applies to the series’ villains. There are antagonists fans just dislike wholly. However, there is a handful of villains who are either just loved and are anti-heroes at points or are so good that fans love to hate them.

10 Hated Heroes: Sam & Dean Winchester

Sam and Dean Winchester are the main characters and protagonists of Supernatural, and fans absolutely adore them. However, the show ran for fifteen years, and sometimes, whether it be due to the writing or stories of the characters, fans were not on board with them.

The stand-out examples are soulless Sam, demon-blood addicted Sam, and Jack-hating Dean. Sam cannot fully be blamed for not having a soul or being manipulated by Ruby, but they still happened, and Sam was not likable in either outing, morphing from hero to villain by the end of the story. As for Dean, his attitude and abuse towards Jack in the late seasons of the show was a new kind of Dean, and a Dean nobody was really on board with.

9 Loved Villains: Azazel

The main villain of Supernatural’s great opening two seasons was yellow-eyes, a.k.a Azazel, a powerful demon and Prince of Hell who served Lucifer and who was a fantastic part of the show during his time.

There was a horror element to his character at times that is absent from so many other main villains of the show. He also was a villain who provided real stakes. He killed Dean after all and caused John to make a deal which in turn killed him and save Dean. The Winchester rivalry with Azazel was personal, and he was such a good villain to have as the Kripke-era built up towards Lucifer.

8 Hated Heroes: Claire Novak

Hated may be a strong word for Claire Novak, daughter of Castiel’s vessel Jimmy and one of the Wayward Sisters. But, there is no doubt she has more haters than most heroes in the show and is not massively likable for a long time.

It is easy to sympathize with Claire, given what she had to go through in losing her parents. Many fans were annoyed by her in her teen years, though. While her character was undoubtedly improved by the likes of Jody Mills, it seems as though Claire is the most unpopular of the Wayward sisters.

7 Loved Villains: Lucifer

Lucifer was the endgame villain for Erik Kripke’s time as Supernatural showrunner, and throughout season 5, he did not disappoint. As the show went on but, it was only a matter of time before Lucifer returned, and when he did, he was just as great.

While there were some weak points for the character, overall, fans loved him. His snarky attitude, funny quips, and genuinely interesting character made him a good part of so many different storylines throughout the show. His time as a rockstar and his fight with Michael may have been fairly terrible, but the character is beloved by fans nonetheless.

6 Hated Heroes: Becky Rosen

Becky Rosen is not necessarily a hero in Supernatural; she is not out there saving the world or doing massive amounts of good in the way Sam, Dean, Bobby, Cas, etc., go and do. However, she is a good person on the show, just not one fans love.

A big reason for that is one of her more villainous acts, using a demon/magic to have Sam fall in love with her. There is no denying everything that went down with Sam was horrendously abusive and disgusting, but at least she admitted as such in her final appearance. The annoying character is far from loved.

5 Loved Villains: Rowena MacLeod

Mother of Crowley and the most powerful witch in the world, Rowena MacLeod, is one of the villains who began as such before transforming into an anti-hero and ally of the Winchesters. She was consistently great.

Intelligent, deceitful, narcissistic, selfish, Rowena was all out for herself for so long and capable of doing so with her immense power. Even during that phase of her time in Supernatural, fans loved her. The show often struggled with female characters, but Rowena was definitely one of the better-treated ones on the show.

4 Hated Heroes: John Winchester

Finding Sam and Dean’s dad was the central storyline of season 1 as the Winchesters sought revenge on Azazel. Despite being such an important part of the boy’s lives, John gets a lot of stick from fans.

So much of the complex emotional and mental issues of Dean, in particular, come from John. His treatment of the boys as their father has been labeled disgusting and abusive by fans for years. Despite having some great, touching moments like “Lebanon,” and despite young flashback John being great, it is hard to argue against his haters.

3 Loved Villains: The Trickster

The Trickster was a villain that popped up in a couple of early episodes of Supernatural and was later got revealed to be the archangel, Gabriel, becoming a hero of the show.

As the Trickster alone, though, the character was still loved. Not only was he the reason for such incredible episodes like “Mystery Spot” and “Changing Channels” (where he was revealed to be Gabriel), he was charismatic, hilarious, and often taught the brothers a thing or two.

2 Hated Heroes: Mary Winchester

Supernatural 5 Heroes Fans Hated (& 5 Villains They Loved)

Despite dying in the opening flashback of the whole series, Mary Winchester was more prominent in Supernatural than her husband due to her return at the hands of Amara. She is, however, no more liked.

In her time in the show fighting alongside her sons, Mary was just not likable. Her presence felt forced, and in terms of being a parent or showing a lot of love towards her sons, she was nothing special and, in fact, betrayed their trust with the whole British Men of Letters debacle.

1 Loved Villain: Crowley

Crowley is not just a villain loved by fans; he is one of the most adored characters in the show, perhaps only fourth behind Sam, Dean, and Jack. It is impossible to hate him truly; at worst, fans can love rooting against him.

Crowley is a hero, a villain, and everything in between throughout his time on the show and is crucial to those seven seasons he is in. His relationships with Dean and Cas are such a joy to watch, and the former King of Hell is a presence sorely missed in the show’s final couple of seasons. Fans adore Crowley for his sarcasm, his layered character, and for being consistently awesome for so long.
