Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

Baby is as important as any living character in Supernatural, but Dean isn’t the only one to drive the iconic Impala. Whether because of death or betrayal, Sam and Dean Winchester have very few friends that last the entirety of Supernatural’s 15 season run, but Baby is there for the brothers throughout their entire hunting career… and even beyond. A 1967 black Chevrolet Impala, Baby serves as the perfect workhorse for long road trips, and the Winchesters have her kitted out with all manner of weapons, traps and sigils to prevent demons and other enemies breaking in.

Dean Winchester is famously possessive of his car in Supernatural, arguably the one true love in his life (sorry Cass). Scratch her paintwork at your peril, and don’t even think about asking to take her for a spin. But while Dean has problems letting even his closest friends behind Baby’s wheel, many have sullied her driver’s seat over the course of Supernatural’s 15 seasons. Sometimes Dean has been in a particularly generous mood and handed the keys over willingly, other times a baddie has commandeered the Impala by force, bringing Dean’s worst nightmare to life.

Despite being destroyed and rebuilt on several occasions, the Impala is one of few Supernatural characters to get a happy ending. From allies to enemies, angels to delinquents, here is every character to drive the iconic Impala in Supernatural.

John Winchester

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

Before Supernatural’s Impala came into the possession of its most famous owner, the car belonged to Dean’s father for many years, although only due to some time-bending shenanigans. Dean travels back to 1973 in Supernatural season 4, meeting a younger version of his old man in the past, and convincing John that the Chevy would be a wise investment. John Winchester remained the owner of the Impala as an innocent family man, and transformed it into a huntermobile upon the death of Mary. Finally, John bequeathed the Impala to Dean, who treasures it as a physical manifestation of his father’s love.

Dean Winchester

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

From the moment Dean pulls up at Sam’s college dorm in the very first Supernatural episode, Baby is his vehicle of choice. Like their father before them, Sam and Dean Winchester use the Impala as their main mode of transport on hunts, with Baby proving more than capable of handling the rigors of the road. Dean has had to put the car back together on several occasions, but Baby’s original spirit remains, and when Dean finally passes away, his precious car is waiting in Heaven, where he drives and drives until his brother is ready to ride shotgun once more.

Sam Winchester

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

Dean Winchester may be unhealthily protective over his car, but brother Sam is most likely to be found driving Baby in his absence. On numerous occasions in Supernatural, Sam takes the wheel, whether due to Dean being elsewhere, a hunting emergency, or just because the elder Winchester is in a giving mood. Sure, the passenger seat might be firmly grooved to the shape of Sam’s backside, but he’s no stranger to the left-hand chair either. After Dean’s untimely demise at the hands of *checks notes* a random vampire, Sam inherits the car, and Baby is next seen under a dust sheet in Sam’s garage. It’s assumed the car passed to Sam’s hunter son, also called Dean.

Bobby Singer

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

Of all the Winchester allies in Supernatural, Bobby Singer is the one Dean trusts most behind Baby’s wheel. Bobby was a friend of John Winchester’s before becoming a surrogate father to Sam and Dean. Naturally, he’s intimately familiar with the Impala and sits proudly as a trusted name on Dean’s (very) short list of permitted drivers. It’s thanks to Bobby and his scrapyard that Dean is able to rebuild his car after the nasty crash that almost took his life in season 1.

Adam Milligan

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

Dean is somewhat less delighted about Adam Milligan driving his car. After the death of Mary Winchester, John had a third son with another woman, keeping Adam a secret from Sam and Dean, and sheltering the youngest Winchester from the dangerous hunter lifestyle. Despite John’s efforts, Adam was killed before ever meeting his two half-brothers, and only encountered Sam and Dean when they saved him from becoming a vessel to the archangel Michael. Learning about John’s hidden history with Adam, Dean is perturbed to discover that the third Winchester brother was given driving lessons in Baby.

Rowena MacLeod

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

Sam and Dean never completely know whether their witch ally can be trusted. One moment Rowena is saving the world with her powerful spells, the next she’s reigning over the denizens of hell, but the flame-haired sorceress proves a worthy friend in Supernatural season 12. With Dean’s memory decaying in tragic fashion and Sam taken prisoner by a family of troublesome witches, Rowena is forced to take control of the Impala and ride to Sam’s rescue.

Alternate Sam & Dean

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

When God begins destroying all of Supernatural’s parallel universes in season 15, alternate versions of Sam and Dean manage to survive by crossing over into the prime world. These Hip-chester brothers prove useful, acting as decoys to distract God from the real protagonists. While the spoiled, wealthy Winchesters (whose father survived and created an entire corporation of hunters) sit alone in the bunker, they decide to take the Impala for a spin, much to Dean’s chagrin.

Jack Kline

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

While Sam lives long enough to start a family in Supernatural, that was never going to be Dean’s future. But the elder Winchester brother does raise a surrogate son in Jack Kline, the nephilim offspring of Lucifer. The parental bond between the Winchesters and Jack becomes so strong that Dean takes the youngster fishing, and even gives driving lessons in the Impala, mirroring John’s method of parenting. Jack’s driving might’ve sent Dean’s stomach into knots but, to be fair, he was only a couple of years old at the time.

Kelly Kline

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

Interestingly, Jack wasn’t the first member of the Kline family to command the Impala in Supernatural. While Kelly is pregnant with Lucifer’s son, the Winchesters debate how to remove Jack’s angelic power. Kelly, however, believes her unborn child could use his powers for good, and drives off with Castiel after stealing the Impala in Supernatural season 12.

Evil Charlie

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

As the honorary sister of the Winchester family, Dean likely wouldn’t have minded Felicia Day’s Charlie having a go behind the wheel of Baby. But rather than Charlie feeling the need for speed, it was her dark side who took the wheel, separated during the character’s adventures through Oz. Making her way to the prime universe, Dark Charlie attempts to kill the man responsible for her parents deaths’, but the Winchesters intervene. Needing a quick escape, Charlie nabs the Impala parked nearby and drives it to the house of Clive Dylan – the “good” half of the Wizard of Oz.

Meg The Demon

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

Supernatural villains are lucky if they manage to slip the Impala keys from Dean Winchester once, but the demonic Meg gets a test drive on several occasions. The first incident comes in Supernatural season 2, when Meg possesses Sam, incapacitates Dean, and takes off in Baby. Like many Supernatural enemies, Meg later becomes an ally to the Winchesters (and Castiel especially), and participates in season 7’s attack on the Leviathans at Dick Roman’s HQ. As part of the ploy, Meg drives the Impala as a distraction while the main team sneak inside.

Gadreel

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

Although it was technically still Sam’s hands on the steering wheel, the younger Winchester brother was possessed by Gadreel in Supernatural season 9. After being outed, the villainous angel steals the Impala and drives off to conspire with another evil agent of the Lord, Metatron.

Sal

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

John Winchester might be the first Supernatural character to own Baby, but he still acquired the car second-hand. Precious little is known about Sal Moriarty, but God confirms this religious individual owned the Chevy Impala until the time of his death, at which point she was put up for sale, ready and waiting for John Winchester to come along.

Constance Welch (The Woman In White)

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

Even in Supernatural’s pilot episode, Baby ends up in the wrong hands. Investigating a spirit known as the Woman in White, Sam and Dean encounter Constance Welch, who lures young men to their deaths after getting picked up in their cars. Welch attempts this trick on the Winchester brothers, taking command of their Impala in order to do so. She controls the car using her ghostly energy, and even tries using it to kill Sam and Dean.

Jessie

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

In Supernatural season 11’s “Baby,” Dean’s Impala gets the spotlight all to herself, with a point-of-view episode based entirely around the iconic vehicle. The story begins when the Winchesters frequent a diner, and the valet (a young girl called Jesse) decides to go for an illicit joyride while Dean stuffs his pie-hole.

Lily Markham

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

In the same episode, Dean Winchester is investigating a Nachzeher (or ghoul-pire, according to Dean), and beheads the offending monster, not realizing that the victim’s wife, Lily, has also been turned. Lily knocks Dean out and ties him up in the Impala’s back seat, while she drives out into the woods to resurrect her Alpha.

Deputy Donelly

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

After Lily successfully reattaches her Alpha’s head, the revived Deputy Donelly takes the wheel himself. Donelly drives until Dean wakes up, but the aggravated hunter successfully wrestles the hijacker into crashing, eventually killing the Nachzeher and restoring Lily to her usual self. Even by Baby’s standards, this was a tough day.

Andy

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

The idea of Dean Winchester allowing a perfect stranger to drive his Impala is so ridiculous, it’s the perfect way for Supernatural to demonstrate Andy’s psychic powers in season 2. A teenage boy capable of influencing the minds of others, Andy takes a liking to Dean’s Impala and asks for the keys. Dean is only too happy to oblige, but less than pleased when he awakens from his hypnotic stupor.

Scarpatti’s Mobsters

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

In their mission to obtain the “blood of a most holy man,” the Winchesters steal the skull of St. Peter from feared mob boss Santino Scarpatti, which they plan to exchange for the blessed claret. Unfortunately, it’s not long until Scarpatti’s goons catch up. Rather than leaving the Impala sitting where it is, the goons demand the keys from Dean and drive back to their employer in the Winchesters’ own ride.

Tracy

Supernatural Everyone Who Drove The Impala

Although Dean is always loathe to loan out the Impala, circumstances sometimes leave him with no other option. In Supernatural season 9, the Winchester brothers team up with a couple of fellow hunters for their ongoing fight against Abaddon. In the midst of battle, Dean manages to hit the Knight of Hell with a sprinkling of holy water, and passes Baby’s keys to another hunter called Tracy, instructing her to stock up on weapons. Tracy then pulls up in the car when the battle is over.

Max

Intending to impress her teenage crush, Max steals the parked Impala in Supernatural season 14, foolishly believing the vehicle is a regular classic Chevy. Not only does she attract the ire of Dean Winchester, but Max and her friends accidentally unleash a horde of paranormal nasties locked inside the various trinkets Baby was carrying at the time. Sam and Dean find their vehicle at a nearby abandoned house/teen hangout spot, and after giving Max “the talk,” everyone leaves on good terms.
