Supernatural season 8 episode 15 sees Sam and Dean help a cop suffering from murderous dreams that might be real. Supernatural began way back in 2005 and follows the Winchester brothers as they travel America in their Chevrolet Impala and hunt down demonic or supernatural beings. The show’s mythology gradually evolved over the course of the show, bringing in angels, Lucifer and God himself. The duo has gone to Hell – literally – and back in their battles across fifteen seasons.

Outside of Sam and Dean, Supernatural has produced fan-favorite characters like angel Castiel (Misha Collins), Bobby, Chuck and many more. The central relationship between actors Jensen Ackles and Jared Padelecki has proven tough to recreate, which is one reason why attempted spinoffs never seem to pan out. It did receive a short-lived animated version in Supernatural: The Anime Series, though Ackles was only available to voice Dean for the final two episodes.

Supernatural season 8 episode 15 “Man’s Best Friend With Benefits” sees the Winchesters arrive to help out a cop friend called James after receiving a text from him. It turns out his half-human, half-Doberman “familiar” Portia is the one who reached out, revealing that James turned to witchcraft to aid in his work after meeting the two of them on a past adventure. She also reveals he’s suffering from horrible nightmares of committing bloody killings – which seem to have really happened.

Dean is especially reluctant to help a witch, but given that they owe James for saving their lives in the past, they investigate what’s happening. Supernatural season 8 episode 15 sees all signs point to James being the murderer, including bloody clothes being found in his home. Portia is eventually able to get a look into his mind during an intimate moment and finds that while he dreamed of the killings, there’s no other context. This suggests the dreams were implanted and he’s being framed, so James and the Winchesters later astral project into the police station to see the evidence against him. It turns out a key witness statement was signed by the familiar of Spencer, another witch he’s friendly with.

Supernatural season 8 episode 15’s finale sees James heading to the witch bar to confront the sleazy familiar, who is killed after he reveals Spencer set him up. Spencer was jealous of James taking Portia as his familiar – especially after the two broke code to become lovers – and set out to ruin him, implanting the memories and committing the killings himself. Dean and Sam run in and Spencer stalls them with memories of past traumas, such as Dean’s stay in Hell. Portia saves the day and the brothers kill Spencer with one of Bobby’s spells.

Supernatural season 8 episode 15 ends with James and Portia driving off together, while Dean talks to Sam about his upcoming Trials of God test. After trying to dissuade him from taking them, he lets Sam know he backs him completely; Sam thanks Dean but hides the fact he just coughed up some blood. Overall, it was a fairly middling episode of the show with only a couple of highlights, including the astral projection sequence.
