Supernatural Predicting How The Winchesters Story Ends

The end of Supernatural is almost upon us, but how will the Winchesters’ story wrap up in the remaining episodes of season 15? When Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins confirmed the end was nigh for Supernatural, many fans were taken by surprise. Since debuting in 2005, Supernatural has built an incredibly loyal fan base over the past 15 years, surviving several brushes with cancellation along the way. Based solely on the strength of its leading duo, Supernatural sometimes felt like it would go on forever, following Sam and Dean Winchester until they traded the Impala for a bus pass and started beating up demons with pentagram-covered walking sticks. Alas, all good things must come to an end.

Appropriately, the main villain of Supernatural’s final season is God, previously known as Chuck Shurley. Fancying himself as a novelist, Chuck’s sole focus is forcing Sam and Dean to kill each other, thus bringing his Supernatural story-within-a-story to an end. Not only has God been manipulating the Winchesters’ lives from the start, but the Good Lord will plumb the murkiest moral depths in pursuit of his goal. Fortunately, a plan is in motion. Billie, the current incarnation of Death, is priming Lucifer’s half-human son, Jack Kline, to defeat God, with the Winchesters by his side.

Despite only a few Supernatural episodes remaining after season 15 went on an enforced break, there’s still plenty to play for as the story heads into its final chapter. How will God be defeated? What will happen to Sam and Dean? And what will the world of Supernatural look like when all is said and done? Here’s our prediction of how Supernatural will ride into the sunset.

How The Winchesters Defeat God In Supernatural

Supernatural Predicting How The Winchesters Story Ends

Only one person in Supernatural knows exactly how God can die, and that’s death herself, Billie. She literally has an entire book on the subject. Unfortunately, cosmic forces prevent Billie from sharing these details with the Winchester brothers, or with the Supernatural audience. All Death has revealed so far is that Jack, Sam and Dean will all play a vital role in saving the universe from God’s wrathful, destructive whims. Billie has also been nurturing Jack’s power by making him consume angel hearts throughout Supernatural season 15, and sent the boy on a mission to restore his soul in “Destiny’s Child.” But how do Team Free Will actually take down the omnipotent Chuck?

Logic suggests that Jack will do the heavy lifting in Supernatural’s final battle. After all, he’s the only character capable of going toe-to-toe with the creator of all things. This is Sam and Dean’s story, so the Winchesters need to have a significant hand in the final battle, but they probably won’t be the only ones helping Jack save the day. Throughout season 15, Supernatural has teased other allies who could rally to join the brothers in battle. Michael, in the body of Adam Milligan, has returned from The Cage, surely setting up a father-son showdown. The Winchesters recently heard from Fortuna how Chuck sidelined the ancient gods out of jealousy, paving the way for some powerful divine assistance. God has made an enemy of Heaven by abandoning his angels, and Rowena is currently in charge of Hell – both sides have enough motivation to come together and stop Chuck causing the end of all creation. Finally, there’s Apocalypse Bobby, Apocalypse Charlie, the Wayward Sisters, and many others who deserve a final hurrah in Supernatural.

When these characters finally come together, the next problem will be how to actually bring God down. Their likely strategy will be to carve out an opening for Jack to strike the finishing blow, bombarding Chuck with everything they have just so the nephilim can get close enough to his target. This provides a great opportunity to bring back some favorites from Supernatural’s past – binding spells, archangel blades, perhaps even a rebuilt Colt. None of it will be enough to kill God, but it should make enough of a dent to cover Jack’s approach.

Will Sam & Dean Survive Supernatural’s Finale?

Supernatural Predicting How The Winchesters Story Ends

The biggest question regarding the end of Supernatural is, of course, whether or not the Winchesters will survive. While many would love nothing more than to see Sam and Dean ride off into the sunset to hunt vampires and wendigos until the end of time, everything about Supernatural points towards a bloody ending. Both Winchester brothers have acknowledged their hunter lifestyle can only end one way, and in Dean’s own words, that’s “Butch and Sundance” style, going down fighting. These sentiments have been echoed by the lead actors themselves, who have stated in interviews that they don’t foresee Sam and Dean making it out of Supernatural alive. The problem Supernatural faces is that if one brother dies, the surviving sibling will always bring the other back, meaning both Winchesters need to share the same fate. But if Sam and Dean live and carry on hunting, that ending wouldn’t give Supernatural the definitive conclusion it needs. Therefore, the Winchesters must die.

In the climactic fight against God, Jack would be closing in on the villain, inches away from striking the finishing blow. The rest of the Winchesters’ allies are down – the Wayward Sisters exhausted, Castiel depleted and Michael smote by his own father. The final stage comes down to Sam, Dean and Jack, and in one final burst of heroism, the Winchesters grab hold of God long enough for Jack to strike, ending God and the reign of terror he holds over the universe. And since coming into physical contact with a raging Chuck is unlikely to be a good thing, Sam and Dean die in the process of defeating their final enemy, saving the universe at the cost of their own lives.

Supernatural and the afterlife are frequent bedfellows, so this is unlikely to be where the story ends. With Death and the angels as their allies, the Winchesters would be offered a choice – go back to the world of the living as reward for saving the universe, or enjoy a peaceful, eternal stay with John and Mary in the afterlife. Mirroring the words of Kansas “Carry On My Wayward Son,” Sam and Dean Winchester’s work would’ve been done. They finally deserve some peace.

What Will The Future Look Like In Supernatural?

There’s more admin to sort out in Supernatural’s finale than just the lives of Sam and Dean Winchester. Chiefly, what happens to the monster-filled world once the brothers have breathed their last? To bring a sense of closure to the narrative, resolution is needed up in Heaven and down on Earth. Previously in Supernatural season 15, God showed Sam the future if the Winchesters won, and it wasn’t pretty. Without Chuck at the top, Earth descends into chaos, leaving paranormal creatures running rampant until the hunting community is overwhelmed. This means a replacement God is needed, and this could be the very purpose behind Billie’s mentoring of Jack. If Lucifer’s son can defeat God, he’s surely powerful enough to replace him, bringing stability to a Chuck-less world. With a new leader in Heaven, the world of Supernatural would enjoy divine harmony for the first time in the show’s history. As for Castiel, who better to act as an advisor and father figure to the new God than the Winchesters’ favorite angel?

Even with Jack’s promotion, monsters will still exist, and hunters will be required to fill the considerable shoes of Sam and Dean Winchester after the brothers opt to remain in Heaven. This could be where the likes of Apocalypse Bobby come into play. Jim Beaver’s character has been suspiciously absent in Supernatural’s final season, alongside Felicia Day’s Apocalypse Charlie. This pair would be ideally suited to start training up a brand new generation of hunters in the Winchesters’ bunker, and Supernatural teased as much back in season 14. Led by Max, a group of Lebanon teens were introduced to the world of the supernatural by Sam and Dean, following an incident involving the ghost of John Wayne Gacy. The kids showed a clear interest in the hunter life, and under the tutelage of Bobby and Charlie, Max and her friends could be whipped into a worthy team of hunters to carry on the Winchesters’ work while Sam and Dean lay their weary heads to rest.
