Survivor: 10 Players Fans Changed Their Minds About, According To Reddit

Survivor has generated lots of fan favorites 40+ seasons, but over time, fans have done a 180 about some of the show’s most iconic players.

Just like any scripted, fictional series, reality TV shows offer viewers interesting storylines, shocking and unpredictable moments, and fun characters. A pioneer of the genre, Survivor has been on the air for more 20 years now, and in that time, the show has given its fans hundreds upon hundreds of memorable characters.

And like any other show, fans’ opinions about the show’s cast changes as the castaways develop throughout a season or upon returning to play again to, three, even five times in some cases. Viewers’ opinions are fluid, so once-hated players may become beloved. Similarly, beloved heroes’ reputations may sour. There are plenty of Survivor players about whom fans changed their minds over time.

Rupert Boneham

Rupert was easily one of the most popular Survivor contestants. when he debuted in Survivor: Pearl Islands. Unfortunately, opinion on him began to change following his appearances on All Stars and subsequent seasons. As Reddit user Paw-Revere writes, “He was America’s favorite guy and then he went on All-Stars and his decline began.”

They give various reasons for his decline, like acting in an obnoxious manner and not listening to his fellow castaways, obsessing over airtime, and acting with diva-like behavior. Sometimes, players shouldn’t be brought back. The memories are better that way.

Sophie Clarke

Sophie Clarke of South Pacific is arguably one of the greatest returning players in Survivor history.

As Redditor xanderay writes, “I honestly did not understand the preseason hype around her when she was announced because she didn’t really make a big impression on me her winning season, so I was indifferent to her going into WAW. But man did she turn up her game on S40, she’s one of my favourite players now.” Sophie’s game in Winners at War has been widely praised, and it turned her from a forgettable winner to a Survivor all-star.

Russell Hantz

Russell Hantz is easily one of the most notorious villains in Survivor history, but opinion remains split on his game on Samoa. As Redditor treple13 nicely summarizes, “I definitely remember watching Samoa for the first time and thinking Russell was an awesome player and the jury robbed him. It wasn’t until I saw HvV that I realized why Russell lost in Samoa.”

It’s a widely held opinion that Russell played a much weaker game in Heroes vs. Villains than he did in Samoa, and it allowed the viewers to peek behind the curtain and see why Russell was so horribly regarded by his fellow castaways.

Ozzy Lusth

One of Survivor’s superstars, Ozzy Lusth initially appeared on Cook Islands and subsequently starred in three other seasons. Unfortunately, it was mostly a case of diminishing returns.

As BryceGandJon writes, “Growing up watching Survivor I wanted to be Ozzy. … Now, at 25, watching South Pacific for the first time and having rewatched CI and FvF and multiple times I don’t think Ozzy ever really understood what Survivor was about.” They, like most people, criticize Ozzy’s “self-righteousness” and call him “a self-centered athlete who couldn’t grow.”

Chris Underwood

Chris Underwood’s gameplay has been largely overshadowed by the negatively received Edge of Extinction twist. It’s a shame, because he actually played a really great game. Some fans think that the Survivor runner-up deserved the win, as they never went to the Edge and made friends with the jury.

But that doesn’t take away from Chris’s win. As Redditor Dvaderstarlord states, “I hated the ending to EOE when it happened and that ended up connecting to Chris. On a rewatch I was able to respect his gameplay upon getting back in more.”

Jeremy Collins

Reddit user BuckeyeGuy16 writes, “Couldn’t stand [Jeremy] going into WaW but his humor and personality won me over. Although I never thought he was a bad person, I just didn’t want to watch him play and now I want to go back and watch Cambodia again.”

Cambodia was a generally well-received season, but some believed that Jeremy was a boring winner. However, he was a completely different (and far more entertaining) player on Winners at War, and it made his critics and detractors see him in a more positive light.

Kelley Wentworth

Another big Cambodia star was Kelley Wentworth. As Redditor TylerA998 writes, “Wentworth, from forgettable pre merger to one of my all time favorites.” Wentworth originally appeared on San Juan del Sur, and as TylerA998 states, she was a rather forgettable pre-merge boot.

However, her time on Cambodia was far more productive, resulting in strong strategic gameplay and a surprising fourth place finish. It proved the very essence of the “second chance” theme, allowing Wentworth to flourish as a Survivor player and personality.

James Clement

James Clement suffered one of the greatest Survivor falls from grace, with China being his most successful and enjoyable run by far. As Reddit user L0stlnTranslation writes, “James was such a likable guy his first season, and he became a real a–hole and almost a bully on HvV unfortunately.”

One of James’s biggest criticisms is his enormous change in personality. In China, he was just the shy and quiet grave digger. But on Micronesia and HvV, he fully leaned into the villain role and actively made fun of other contestants. It was not a good look for him, and it changed many opinions.

J.T. Thomas

Reddit user Shad3slayer writes, “JT. From one of the best winners ever to a literal joke on his subsequent seasons.” J.T. managed to play a perfect game on Tocantins, which is when a winning player receives no elimination votes throughout the seasons and wins by unanimous decision.

It was a stellar and historic game. Unfortunately, he played horrific games in both Heroes vs. Villains and Game Changers, hilariously blundering hidden immunity idols and becoming a literal joke within the Survivor community.

Sandra Diaz-Twine

Redditor SoulExecution states, “Sandra. I don’t typically enjoy quiet/subtle gameplay, and watching HvV, I felt a little cheated that Parvati didn’t win. But watching Pearl Islands let me appreciate the ‘anyone but me’ strategy a lot more.”

Sandra’s game in Heroes vs. Villains is understandably divisive, as many people think that she floated her way to final three. However, Sandra plays a very strong social game, and as SoulExecution writes, she helped pioneer the “anyone but me” strategy. She’s a legendary player for a reason.
