Susan Sarandon & Geena Davis Reunite In Original Car For Thelma & Louise Anniversary

Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis reunited for a Los Angeles charity event for a 30th-anniversary screening of their film Thelma & Louise, along with the movie’s original 1966 Ford Thunderbird convertible. Sarandon and Davis starred in the film about two friends who embarked on an impromptu road trip that ended with an unforeseen set of circumstances after Louise fatally shot a man who tried to rape Thelma at a bar.

Sarandon and Davis became cultural icons upon the film’s release. Thelma & Louise took the male buddy-road trip film and turned it on its head. In the 1991 film, the actresses played two women whose characters’ journey’s challenged traditional notions of femininity. The characters of Thelma and Louise were seen as feminist trailblazers and, for their efforts, the film was honored with six nominations at the Academy Awards in 1992. It won a golden statuette in the category of Best Original Screenplay for Callie Khouri. Sarandon and Davis were also nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

The actresses spoke with THR about the reception the film initially received at a charity screening experience held at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, where they posed with the iconic turquoise Thunderbird and recreated the kiss from the end of the movie. While the film was generally well-received by critics, some criticized it for what they saw as glamorizing violence. The stars and Khouri were shocked by the response. Sarandon said:

“I completely underestimated that we were backing into territory held by white heterosexual males. They got offended and accused us of glorifying murder and suicide and all kinds of things. It didn’t seem like a big deal, it seemed like it was unusual that there would be a woman that you could be friends with in a film. Normally, if there were two women in a film, you automatically hated each other for some reason. … Next thing we knew, all hell broke loose.”

The film, which portrayed Thelma and Louise as independent women prepared to risk it all for friendship, was praised as a step forward for female empowerment in Hollywood. Some critics took exception to the depiction of violence against men in the film. However, it appeared to have the opposite effect on its female audience who embraced the women as powerful and strong.

Thelma & Louise continues to hold a key role in the development of strong, leading female characters in the film world. Called a feminist movie as the protagonists decided to take their destiny into their own hands, it was revolutionary at the time and a step forward for the industry. While the premise of the film made Hollywood take notice of female role models in film, it would take many years for the stereotypical damsel in distress as a key plot point to begin to fade out in the film industry.
