Sylvester Stallone shares some rare behind-the-scenes footage of him and Carl Weathers in the ring during the making of the original Rocky film. In 1976, Stallone wrote and starred in a watershed film, which was nominated for a handful of Oscars, winning Best Picture and Best Director. Director John Avildsen’s Rocky delivered the Italian Stallion, a Philly slugger determined to prove wasn’t just another bum from the neighborhood. His fateful exhibition with the heavyweight boxing champion of the world, Apollo Creed (Weathers), is now remembered as one of the greatest fights in cinematic history.

The success of Rocky led to the Stallone-helmed follow-ups, Rocky II, III, IV, and 2006’s Rocky Balboa. Then, in 2015’s Creed, writer/director Ryan Coogler resurrected the franchise by having Rocky pass the torch to Apollo’s illegitimate son Adonis (Michael B. Jordan) before taking on Ivan Drago’s son in Creed II (2018). Like the original Rocky and its sequel Rocky II, the Creed franchise is more grounded in realism and grit. That being said, every film in the Rocky universe requires a lot of its actors (physically).

Stallone often takes to social media to share BTS photos/videos from his work on the Rocky franchise and other past films. Recently, the 75-year-old actor posted a video of him and Weathers practicing fight choreography along with an interview for the original 1976 film. The rare footage appears to be part of a documentary special that was filmed while production was underway. Check it out below:

Stallone has been wrapped up in the Rocky franchise this year. The actor/writer/director went back and fixed what he disliked about the original version of Rocky IV, restoring scenes that were cut, tweaking existing scenes, and cutting those he was never happy with. Rocky IV: Rocky vs. Drago director’s cut broke pandemic records through its ticket presales for a one-night event on November 11 and is now available on-demand. It’s worth noting that Stallone almost died during the filming of Rocky IV when Dolph Lundgren accidentally hit him with a devastating blow—a testament to the hard work that goes into making Rocky’s fight scenes feel authentic, a methodology that began in 1976.

There’s a reason people still call Stallone “champ” – Rocky has a statue in Philadelphia, and the original film continues to resonate with audiences. In the above interview, Stallone talks about how he, like Rocky, was an underdog before he wrote, sold, and starred in the film that would change his life. Like its titular character, the Rocky franchise has kept coming back for more because everyone loves an underdog, especially when he can throw a punch.
