A lot of characters came and went on Teen Wolf, but Lydia Martin remained. In fact, she was the only female member of Scott McCall’s pack to remain on the series from the series premiere to the series finale. She appeared in almost as many episodes as Scott McCall himself. Lydia Martin might as well have been the supernatural queen of Beacon Hills.

During her reign as the town’s resident banshee, Lydia had a variety of one-liners. Sometimes, they were deep and meaningful, and other times, she was full of sarcasm. Regardless of her tone, Lydia Martin was always iconic.

“Not All Monsters Do Monstrous Things”

Lydia’s line here might as well have been the theme of the entire series. She made the comment to Meredith after the other banshee declared that her reasoning for creating the deadpool was that they were all monsters.

Lydia’s assertion that a supernatural creature didn’t have to be the bad guy was the theme of Scott’s pack. Claws and fangs gave a lot of the characters power, but they didn’t have to use that power to do bad things. Most of Lydia’s friends were perfect examples of that.

9 “I Will Not Fall Prey To Society’s Desire To Turn Girls Into Emotionally Insecure Neurotics Who Pull Up Their Dresses At The First Flattering Remark”

In season one, Jackson and Lydia broke up because he was dropping “dead weight” in his life in preparation to become a werewolf. As a result, Lydia ended up going to a school dance with Stiles. Lydia made this particular remark right after Jackson refused to compliment her appearance.

At the time, Lydia was actually very invested in what other people thought of her. She had a reputation to maintain. She thawed to Stiles when he told her she looked beautiful, and when he later explained that he knew how smart she was. Lydia enjoyed the validation, even if she didn’t want to.

8 “I Don’t Want To Be Safe; I Want To Save Stiles”

For most of the series, Scott’s pack treated Lydia like someone fragile they had to protect. By season five, Lydia had honed her skills and taken self-defense lessons from Jordan Parrish. In season six, she was tired of being the one everyone else had to keep safe.

While researching the Ghost Riders, Lydia discovered that she would never be taken by them because she was a banshee. Instead, they would allow her to stay safe in an abandoned Beacon Hills with a gift or two to keep her company. That didn’t sit well with Lydia. Instead of being safe, she wanted to be able to save the person she cared about – Stiles.

7 “I’m Not Like You Guys. I Don’t Have Claws… I Just Have Voices In My Head”

When Lydia’s banshee abilities activated, no one had any idea what they were dealing with. Lydia was often labeled as the crazy one in her group of friends because she heard and saw things no one else did. Not knowing what was happening to her – and not having a way to defend herself – really got to her.

It turned out Lydia didn’t “just have” voices in her head, however. Her banshee scream was able to be used as a weapon. It just took Lydia a long time to learn how to use it.

6 “Someone Tried To Strangle Me And I Survived; I Don’t Need To Hide That”

This particular quote is a great demonstration of how much Lydia grew over the course of Teen Wolf. In the first season, she frequently felt the need to hide who she really was. She maintained an iron grip on the school’s social structure so no one would see that she was a genius and make fun of her or alienate her for it.

When her mother suggested covering up bruises around her neck with makeup to hide what happened to her, Lydia refused. She realized that she should be proud of who she was – a survivor. That moment was the one that made Lydia truly start to embrace who she was and stop hiding her intelligence from those around her.

5 “You Can’t Just Erase People; They Leave Things Behind”

When the Ghost Riders came to Beacon Hills, they brought confusion and devastation with them. As they took people from the town, they literally erased them from existence. Lydia begged to differ.

Despite the Ghost Riders trying to remake reality, there were gaps left by absences, something Lydia noticed more than most thanks to her banshee abilities. Lydia didn’t give up on her pursuit of her own missing memory. She risked people believing she was crazy (again) to pull wallpaper away from covered doors, ask hard questions, and pry at other people’s memories until she got the answers she was looking for. While all of this occurred largely in her quest to find Stiles, it was also a good way to combine her own detective skills with her banshee ones.

4 “I Got Bored With Classical Latin”

One of the first hints in the series that there was more to Lydia than met the eye was way back in season one before she knew the truth about the supernatural creatures in town. Allison Argent needed someone to translate some Archaic Latin for her.

Lydia, despite wanting to hang out with Allison without pouring through ancient texts, informed her that she could translate because she “got bored with Classical Latin” and decided to learn the Archaic version. Lydia Martin, learning dead languages in her spare time, could not convince the audience she wasn’t a genius.

3 “I Swear To God, It Literally Makes Me Want To Scream”

Lydia’s screaming is now well known to Teen Wolf fans, but there was a time on the show when she didn’t do a whole lot of it. In fact, when her banshee abilities were dormant in season one, she didn’t really scream at all. It was when her banshee abilities began to evolve that Lydia developed the penchant for making noise.

Lydia said this particular line while trying to help Scott and Stiles in an investigation. She kept feeling like she knew something, but couldn’t figure out what it was, and the frustration built up until she just wanted to scream. Realizing that her screams had always led to breakthroughs, Stiles and Scott encouraged her to do just that.

2 “What The Hell Is A Stiles?”

This might just be the Lydia quote the audience knows best. Said twice by her during the series, it very much bookended her time on the show. Lydia first uttered the words to her mother when she was hopped up on prescription medication to deal with the trauma of seeing a werewolf in action in season one. In denial about what she saw, she tried to medicate her troubles away, and became confused when Stiles came to visit her. That was when he wasn’t even one of her friends.

Lydia said the words again after the Ghost Riders took her memories of Stiles in season six, but his name still persisted in her subconscious, causing her to write it over and over again. It was a callback to the beginning for long time fans, but one loaded with more meaning by then.

1 “I Never Said It Back”

When Teen Wolf first began, Stiles Stilinski was obsessed with Lydia Martin. She didn’t know he existed. That changed when Lydia was right in the middle of the supernatural drama with Peter Hale’s alpha werewolf terrifying everyone in town. When Lydia began to understand her banshee history, Stiles became one of her closest friends. His feelings for her never completely went away, even though they both dated other people. By season six, they were in some sort of relationship, though it wasn’t entirely clear if they were more than friends.

When Stiles vanished with the Ghost Riders, leaving Lydia with a “remember, I love you,” Lydia didn’t get a chance to respond to him. His return prompted an immediate, “I never said it back” from Lydia, but fans didn’t really need professions of love with all the two had been through.
