During the fourth season of Teen Wolf, Scott becomes Liam’s mentor. After turning the 14-year-old into a werewolf to save his life, Scott takes him under his wing and offers him guidance. Liam goes through the same physical transformation as Scott, and as a teen wolf, his story parallels Scott’s.

Since he checks all of the necessary boxes as well as some additional ones, Liam could have been the protagonist of Teen Wolf. Despite how attached fans have grown to Scott McCall, there are several things that make Liam a better choice for the titular character.

Liam Has A More Complex Backstory

There’s still plenty that viewers don’t know about Liam’s childhood, but from the information the show has provided, it’s clear he has a backstory worth diving into. Liam lives with his mother and step-father and has always struggled with anger-management issues.

Being a werewolf makes it difficult for Scott to control his temper, despite displaying no previous problems. Liam’s inability to stifle his rage gives him an additional obstacle to overcome and makes his transformation an even more complex plotline.

Liam’s Love Interest Is Also Supernatural

Although Scott and Allison are an incredible couple in Teen Wolf, a supernatural creature falling in love with a human is a thoroughly played-out trope. There are plenty of entertaining aspects to their relationship, but Liam and Hayden offer a more unique dynamic.

Both characters understand the other’s struggle, as becoming a supernatural creature is clearly a life-changing event. Liam and Hayden each have their own special abilities, which allows them to face their enemies together.

Liam Is Dangerously Arrogant

Before his transition, Liam acted as if he was on top of the world. His arrogance is what caused Scott and Stiles to initially dislike him, and Liam was under the impression that he was invincible.

Almost dying and becoming a werewolf is a wake-up call, yet, he’s still a conceited character. Liam may be fearful, but when paired with his superiority complex, he’s unpredictable. Rather than having a protagonist that makes level-headed decisions, it would be interesting to follow one who acts out of pride.

Liam Has More Significant Character Development

Because he’s been such a well-rounded person since the early seasons of the show, Scott’s character arc in Teen Wolf isn’t as good as it could have been. Scott does have his fair share of growth and, maturity-wise, he’s on a completely different level than he was in the pilot.

Yet, as a whole, Liam displays a more significant evolution. He’s unrecognizable from the fourteen-year-old that Scott and Stiles originally detested, and Liam becomes a true team player. If Liam had all six seasons dedicated to his arc, it could have been even more intricate than it is already.

Liam Isn’t A Natural Leader

There are several reasons Scott is the best leader in Teen Wolf. He leads with love and compassion and doesn’t ask anyone to do what he isn’t willing to do himself. Scott never lets his fear show, which makes his pack feel safe and assured, while Liam is the opposite.

Liam easily slips into panic, as most teenagers would if their life was in danger every day. Contrastingly, Scott hides his trepidation so well, that it can be hard to connect with him at times. Charging headfirst into danger isn’t as easy as Scott makes it seem, and Liam’s vulnerability causes him to be more relatable.

Liam’s Success Is Up In The Air Without Scott

Liam’s success rested heavily on Scott’s shoulders and it would be interesting to see how he fares on his own. Scott does graduate after Teen Wolf season 6 Part One, but he remains in Beacon Hills and continues to help Liam at every turn.

Because Derek didn’t care much about being a mentor, Scott was left mostly to his own devices after his transition. Liam had trouble even with Scott’s help and his personality made being a werewolf even more difficult. There are an endless amount of places the series could go with Liam if he didn’t have Scott as a teacher.

Liam And Mason Parallel Scott And Stiles

There’s no doubt that Scott and Stiles are irreplaceable in viewers’ minds. The show starts and ends with them and it wouldn’t be nearly as good without their deep connection and brotherly bond. However, Liam and Masons’ friendship parallels the original duo’s so heavily, that it has the potential to be just as successful.

Mason might not be quite as funny as Stiles is in Teen Wolf, but he has his own sense of humor. If Liam were the protagonist, there would be an even bigger emphasis on his friendship with Mason, and they could have easily been the show’s main duo from the beginning.

Liam Lacks Scott’s Emotional Maturity

Scott might have refused to kill his enemies, but it’s unlikely that Liam would have shared the same sentiment. Although Liam has the better character arc of the two, Scott has a significant impact on how it turns out.

Most adults don’t have the same level of emotional maturity as Scott McCall does, let alone a freshman in high school. Liam only learns to think through his decisions because he’s taught to. It’s clear that he was an entirely different person before he met Scott, and the old Liam is full of story-telling potential.

Liam Isn’t An Alpha

It takes him a few seasons to achieve the status, but Scott becomes a true alpha. Because he earns his power instead of stealing it, Scott is more powerful than the other alphas in the series. Scott has an advantage over his enemies, and bounty hunters were even hesitant to go after him in Teen Wolf season 4.

Liam remains a beta throughout the show, and even as a protagonist, it’s unlikely he’ll have what it takes to be a true alpha. He’s in a much more vulnerable position than Scott, which intensifies the danger and increases the stakes.
