Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows – the sequel to Paramount Pictures’ 2014 live-action TMNT film reboot – will, if nothing else, dive deeper into the franchise’s (more than) thirty years of lore than its predecessor. TMNT costars Megan Fox and Will Arnett are reprising their respective roles as reporter April O’Neil and cameraman Vernon Fenwick in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel, along with Turtle motion-capture actors Alan Ritchson, Jeremy Howard, Pete Ploszek, and Noel Fisher as, in turn, Raphael, Donatello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo.

Meanwhile, the list of newcomers includes Arrow’s Stephen Amell as the human vigilante Casey Jones; actor/filmmaker Tyler Perry as a new version of mad scientist Baxter Stockman; Gary Anthony Williams and Stephen Farrelly (a.k.a. WWE/WWF star Sheamus) as the human criminals-turned mutant baddies Bebop and Rocksteady; Brian Tee (The Wolverine) as a new Shredder; and Laura Linney as an average cop, who gets caught up in all this madness. These TMNT additions are either featured heavily in or can be glimpsed in the newly-released Out of the Shadows teaser trailer – which we’ve embedded above, of course.

The first Out of the Shadows trailer suggest this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles installment is very much embracing the “go bigger” sequel approach, complete with more classic elements from the TMNT comic books and cartoon TV series past – see the mutation of Bebop and Rocksteady and/or the Turtle Van a.k.a. the Party Wagon (shown in the teaser) – and stylized action, be it via slow-motion shots (similar to those featured in the 2014 TMNT film) or sequences where Casey Jones shows off his mad hockey-fighting skills. The general aesthetic of Out of the Shadows appears to be the same as its predecessor, though, thanks in part to the return of cinematographer Lula Carvalho.

Dave Green (Earth to Echo) took over directing duties on the TMNT sequel, after the film franchise’s 2014 reboot was helmed by producer Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes’ frequent collaborator, Jonathan Liebesman. Green’s style on the film looks to be in line with what fans have come to expect from most Bay productions (good and bad), but this time around TMNT screenwriters Josh Applebaum and André Nemec seem to pushing for more of a cartoony tone in terms of the film’s dialogue and characterization – and that’s a good thing, in this case.

The 2014 TMNT live-action film reboot is, all things considered, arguably an entertaining bit of popcorn entertainment, though it often plays out like a patchwork of ideas and stylistic choices – no doubt due to the number of changes that the project went through during its development – so already the sequel feels like a step up, judging by the cohesive tone of the trailer footage. If that holds true for the actual movie, then it’s possible that Out of the Shadows will prove to be the big, goofy, crowd-pleasing romp that both Turtles fans young and old will rally behind.
