[UPDATE: Maybe a Tekken prequel ISN’T on the way? Scroll down for details.]

Name every failed video game turned film and you may come up with a list longer than Samuel L Jackson’s filmography (if such a thing is possible). From Resident Evil to Doom; or the 1994 version of Double Dragon to Street Fighter (Van Damme’s or Kristin Kruek’s – take your pick) – all the way to the 2010 Dwight H. Little version of Tekken, video game movies have had a hard road to walk on.

But in the case of Tekken, hope may be on the way.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that during the Cannes film festival, Crystal Sky Pictures announced a prequel to the Tekken movie, entitled Tekken: Rise of the Tournament; they have also recruited writer/director Prachya Pinkaew (Ong Bak, The Protector) to steer the latest film version of the mega popular video game fighting series.

For those unfamiliar with Pinkaew’s work, fret not. He has a solid international reputation as an action director who should be able to effortlessly capture some, if not all, of the intense hand-to-hand combat scenes that have helped make Tekken – the video game – into a global success.

No official cast has been announced as of yet for Tekken: Rise of the Tournament, but word is Crystal Sky would like to use actors who resemble the characters of Tekken. What this means for the A-list crowd is unknown, but one can’t rule out heavy-hitters (pun intended) like Tony Jaa (Ong Bak, The Protector), Iko Uwais (Merantu, The Raid: Redemption) or Donnie Yen (Ip Man) receiving phone calls from their agents soon.

UPDATE: Katsuhiro Harada, creator of the Tekken video game franchise, is claiming that Crystal Sky may NOT be bringing a new Tekken prequel film to the screen. Harada has been a vocal opposer of the first Tekken movie, and Tweeted the following when this news of the prequel broke:

Why u guys ALWAYS believe a rumor and jumping the gun

Simple, eloquent, voice of dissension. What remains to be seen is if Harada truly has the influence to stop this movie from happening, or if Crystal Sky will proceed with or without his blessing. Considering a director is already being named, right now it seems the latter case is more likely.

As of now there is no official release date for Tekken: Rise of the Tournament but keep checking with Screen Rant for further details.
