Tenacious D’s 10 Funniest OnScreen Songs

It was 1994 when Jack Black and Kyle Gass united to form the comedy rock duo Tenacious D. Three years later, the group was picked up by HBO, where they released six episodes of their comedy series from 1997 until 2000 (available on YouTube) before their first studio album in 2001.

Since then, the band has released six more albums, an EP, and the movie Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny (2006), and the conclusion of their most recent tour this past February marks 26 years that they’ve been together. No comedy group sees this much success without a healthy number of laughs, so today we’re honoring their 10 funniest on-screen performances.

10 History

Tenacious D’s 10 Funniest OnScreen Songs

The only song portrayed on screen in both the Tenacious D movie and HBO series, both productions feature Jack and Kyle performing the song at a bar’s open mic night. It’s not only the first song the duo publically performs in the movie, but it’s also the one that leads off the show’s pilot.

As the title suggests, the song is about the band’s history, but as the opening lyrics state, it’s not just a list of things that they’ve done in the past, it’s a chronicling of their rise to power. The song is used again by the duo to musically battle the police in the series finale.

9 Kielbasa

In the third episode of their HBO series – “Death of a Dream” – Jack and Kyle are forced to confront the concept that their dream of becoming rockstars is as likely as finding the Easter Bunny or Sasquatch.

This revelation sends the guys on a journey through the five stages of grief, the third of which is “door-to-door rocking”, which results in the hilarious image of them singing a “Kielbasa” line about butt cheeks to a woman and her baby before having the door slammed in their faces.

8 Kickapoo

The song that opens the Tenacious D movie, “Kickapoo” tells the story of how a young Jack ran away from his oppressive family’s home in the fictional town of Kickapoo, Missouri, to play rock & roll music in Hollywood.

The image of Jack as a child (Troy Gentile) singing about both using a sword to slice a dragon’s cockles and his religious family is the funniest image from the performance, but the most impressive parts come from verses sung by guest stars Meat Loaf and Ronnie James Dio.

7 Beelzeboss

From the moment that Jack and Kyle learn the demonic origins of the fabled Pick of Destiny that they pursue throughout their movie, an eventual musical showdown with the Devil himself (Dave Grohl) becomes inevitable.

What results is an epic and climactic 11-minute heavy-metal musical battle with Satan entitled “Beelzeboss”. Impressive musical displays are accompanied by comically disturbing lyrics and images as the D tenaciously fights to save their eternal souls and the fate of all humanity by defeating Lucifer and sending him back to Hell.

6 Sasquatch/Papagenu

When Jack and Kyle have reached the fifth and final stage of grieving in “Death of a Dream” – acceptance – they’re about to burn their guitars and say goodbye to their rockstar fantasy forever, until they spot the legendary Sasquatch (John C. Reilly), which inspires them to continue pursuing their dream.

Moreover, they write a song called “Sasquatch”, in which they free the mythical animal from a bear trap, resulting in Sasquatch becoming their friend and drummer. Jack has another amusing encounter with Sasquatch in their movie after accidentally eating psychedelic mushrooms in the woods, resulting in a second Sasquatch song called “Papagenu”.

5 Break-In City (Storm The Gate)

After discovering that the Pick of Destiny is hidden in the Rock & Roll Museum, Jack and Kyle devise a plan to break into the seemingly impenetrable fortress and steal it in a daring heist.

In true Tenacious D fashion, they can’t help but narrate their heist with a jam, which is where “Storm the Gates” claims its origin. The song sounds just as improvised as their mission, which is devised from rumors, brochures, and a drawing on a napkin given to them by a stranger at a diner (Tim Robbins).

4 Lee

Episode five of the series sees the band gain a new diehard fan in Lee (Jason Reed). Jack and Kyle are initially creeped out by Lee’s extensive knowledge of them, but the tables quickly turn when the guys go all of 10 minutes without attention.

Jack and Kyle soon find themselves competing for Lee’s attention, resulting in the song “Lee”, which depicts the band and Lee flying, skinny dipping, and giving birth together before the guys stab Lee in a Psycho (1960) tribute. Don’t worry, they make-up and Lee joins the band for their next gig.

3 Karate

What would you do if you told your best friend and bandmate about a person you had just met and fallen in love with, only to find that same friend betraying you by hitting on the love of your life the very next day?

If you’re Jack Black, you’d challenge Kyle to a karate battle on the spot, and you’d sing a funny song called “Karate” while you do it, too. With moves like the decapitating flying kick, magic flying fast-food sack, and magic spinning loose change, the fight gets extreme before a gunman randomly shows up with disastrous consequences.

2 Master Exploder

Unfortunately for Tenacious D, they never actually get the chance to perform their song “Master Exploder” for a real audience in their movie, but it doesn’t keep Jack from having a dream about what would’ve been a literally mind-blowing performance.

Armed with the supernatural powers of the Pick of Destiny, Jack and Kyle give a god-like heavy-metal performance at the open mic night at their usual bar, causing all the women in the crowd to be overcome with sexual arousal and the men’s heads to explode.

1 Tribute

There’s a good chance Tenacious D never would’ve become what they are without their first successful single – “Tribute”. According to the bandmates, after trying to create the greatest song in the world, the pair instead settled on creating a tribute song to the greatest song in the world.

The climax of their movie may pit the band against Satan, but their first face-off against a demon came in the fourth episode of their show – “The Greatest Song in the World”. After their neighbor (Scott Adsit) calls the cops on them for making too much noise, the band persuades the officer with a demon-fighting song/story so great that it gets them off the hook.
