Terraria Empress of Light Boss Fight Guide

During the course of Terraria, players will be forced to fight all manner of normal enemies and bosses to progress through the game. Some of the enemies are optional, others are easy to take care of, and others will have players pulling their hair out from sheer difficulty. The only way to survive some of the more difficult bosses of Terraria is for players to be completely prepared for everything that will be thrown at them.

One of the more difficult bosses that players will face off against is the Hardmode boss Empress of Light. She was added to the game with the new Journey’s End update and is not necessary to progress through the game. Players who beat her however will gain some extremely strong late-game gear to play around with. This guide is here to show players how to summon Empress of Light and bring her down, as she is one of the toughest bosses in the game.

Terraria: How to Summon Empress of Light

Terraria Empress of Light Boss Fight Guide

In order to summon the Empress of Light, players will first need to defeat all of the mechanical bosses and Plantera. Once Plantera is taken care of, a specific bug called the Prismatic Lacewing will begin appearing in the Hollow Biome at night. Only one Prismatic Lacewing will spawn at a time, and players can only find one between the hours of 7:30 PM to 12:00 AM in-game.

Players can then either kill the Prismatic Lacewing or capture it. Killing the creature will automatically spawn the boss, or it can be captured and released later when the player is more prepared for the fight. The Empress of Light can only be summoned inside the Hollow, so releasing a Prismatic Lacewing in any other biome will cause the creature to disappear. Additionally, Empress of Light is much stronger and capable of killing players with one hit during the day. Unless players are fighting the boss in order to gain the Terraprisma sword, they should only fight Empress of Light during nighttime.

Terraria: Empress of Light Attacks

Terraria Empress of Light Boss Fight Guide

Empress of Light has many attacks that can be extremely difficult for players to avoid and will cause a lot of damage if they make contact. The developers of Terraria have stated that this boss is heavily inspired by bullet-hell shooters, which should tell players exactly how difficult this fight will be for them. Empress of Light’s attacks are as follows:

Prismatic Bolts- She will summon a large number of bolts around her that hover for a few moments before homing in on the player. This attack doesn’t track the player perfectly, so those who jump or make a sharp turn at the last second can avoid them.

Dash Attacks- Empress of Light will hover on the left or right side of the screen before zooming through the player to the other side.

Sun Dance- She will hover on the upper left side of the screen and create a ring 6 rays of light that extend out from her body and rotate clockwise. Each time that Empress of Light does this attack, she will create three sets of rays.

Everlasting Rainbow- Empress of Light will create a ring of 13 stars that spiral clockwise towards the player before returning to their original position. This attack leaves behind a trail of light that will damage any player who touches it.

Ethereal Lance- With this attack, she summons a swarm of swords that will launch themselves towards the direction the player is heading in. This attack does no damage until the swords are launched, so players shouldn’t worry until they begin moving.

If players decide to fight Empress of Light on Expert or Master mode, she will spend the entire fight enraged, so she will be faster and capable of causing more damage. Most of her projectile attacks gain additional projectiles or last longer than normal. If fought during the day Empress of Light will also be enraged, but she will gain such a large damage boost that any attack will instantly kill players no matter what difficulty level they are on.

Terraria: Killing the Empress of Light

The upside to this fight is that the Empress of Light has a pattern for each of her attacks, and does not switch them up at all. This means that players who memorize this pattern will know which attacks are coming before they are even telegraphed. The order of attacks for phase one is.

1. Prismatic Bolts- Players should wait until the attack is about to hit, and then dash to the side or jump to avoid damage.

2. Dash Attack- Players can jump and use wings to fly above Empress of Light when she attempts this attack.

3. Sun Dance- Stay in between the beams of light to avoid taking damage.

4. Dash Attack- Players can jump and use wings to fly above Empress of Light when she attempts this attack.

5. Everlasting Rainbow- Players will just need to run away from the spiraling stars and avoid the lingering lights until they fade away.

6. Prismatic Bolts- Players should wait until the attack is about to hit, and then dash to the side or jump to avoid damage.

7. Dash Attack- Players can jump and use wings to fly above Empress of Light when she attempts this attack.

8. Ethereal Lance- Players will just need to remember that this attack does no damage until the swords are launched, so get out of their way before they start moving.

9. Dash Attack- Players can jump and use wings to fly above Empress of Light when she attempts this attack.

10. Everlasting Rainbow- Players will just need to run away from the spiraling stars and avoid the lingering lights until they fade away.

Almost all of these attacks are difficult to dodge, so the best practice is for players to have fast boots and wings equipped in order to make quick getaways when she tries to attack. Players will want to particularly become good at jumping over the Dash Attack and avoiding Prismatic bolts during this part of the fight, as she uses those attacks a lot in her pattern.

Once Empress of Light drops below 50% health she will disappear momentarily before reappearing directly above the player and launching into a slightly different pattern of attacks. Most of these attacks appear in the exact same way that they did during the first phase, but a couple of attacks gain new abilities.

Etereal Lance Phase 2: This attack will now summon 4 sets of swords in different corners of the screen. One set will move from left to right, one from right to left, one from top right to bottom left, and another from top left to bottom right. This attack can also occasionally be used right after Empress of Light does a Dash Attack.

Prismatic Bolt- This attack will now be cast in a circle around Empress of Light rather than above her head. Players can avoid the attack in the same way.

In order to finish this fight, players will need to focus on dodging rather than causing damage. This fight should be played like a difficult Dark Souls boss, which means only attack when there is an opening and don’t get greedy. One false move is all that’s needed to get the player killed in a heartbeat. Those who are patient and keep their guard up will take the Empress of Light and find themselves the proud owners of all kinds of fun new loot.
