Terraria: Tips & Tricks For New Players

Playing Terraria for the first time can be a daunting task for new inexperienced players. This guide will show new players where to get started.

Terraria has been out for almost a decade at this point and is available on pretty much every platform in existence from the Nintendo 3DS to the PlayStation 4. Pretty much everyone in the world has access to this game, and its relatively cheap so there is very little reason not to check it out, and frankly everyone probably should try it out at least once. The only issue with playing Terraria though, is where in the world are players supposed to start?

Terraria is notoriously obtuse and doesn’t explain a lot of its features or how the player is supposed to progress. With the most recent update there were also another 1000 items and several new enemies added to the game as well, which makes it even more difficult to figure out what players are supposed to be doing at any given time. This guide will show players how to get started in the world of Terraria and how to prepare themselves for hard mode.

Terraria: Creating a World and Choosing Difficulty

Before players even begin their first game in Terraria they will be given the option of creating their character, the world, and picking a difficulty. Character creation isn’t very extensive, but players will want to ensure they like the look of their character before beginning. After all players will be looking at their character for the rest of the game. Choosing the world and difficulty is a much more important part of beginning a game.

Players will have three options for choosing the size of their world: Small, Medium, and Large. Small is a good choice for beginning players because it is much easier to gain materials more quickly in the world. The only issue though is that as players continue to progress, they may find that aren’t enough resources in the world to support them through the later stages of the game. Despite an abundance of resources, large worlds can be difficult to traverse in the first few hours. The best option is to pick a medium world since it gives the best both types of worlds.

Difficulty is another important decision that players will need to make, and those that are playing on PC will actually have three options: Normal, Expert, and Master. Each one is more difficult than the last as enemies will gain damage boosts, and bosses will learn new abilities. The trade-off though is that Expert and Master modes have better loot for players to find. New players should probably stick to normal mode for now until they grow used to Terraria.

Terraria: Building Your First House

Once players drop into their new world, they will find themselves smack dab in the middle of the map with only a copper shortsword, pickaxe, and axe in their inventory. The very first thing that players will want to do is take their axe and begin chopping down trees in the surrounding area to gain wood. Once players have a sizable amount of wood, they should build a house that is at least 10 blocks wide and 5 blocks tall. This shelter isn’t complete yet though! Players will need to go into their crafting menu and create a workbench to finish up their new house.

Once the workbench is created and placed inside the house, players will be able to use the wood they collected to create wooden walls, a door, a table, and a chair. Walls will need to be placed in the background to ensure that the house is completely safe from monsters. Then the door should be placed on one side, so that the player can enter and exit whenever they wish. Put the table and chair inside and then the local guide will move inside and claim it as his home. Now players will be safe from any monsters that come out at night, and a home base to plan their further adventures from.

Terraria: Crafting Essential Beginner Items

Now that players have a solid house, they should ensure that their gear is good enough for some early adventuring. Players will want to first create a wooden sword, which is more effective than the copper one because of its wider attack area. They should also craft a wooden hammer as well, as it will allow players to destroy break placed objects or walls and move them to another location.

Before nighttime hits, players will want to venture out and use their new sword to kill as many slimes as they can find in the immediate area. Players will be gain some very important gel from these creatures which can in turn be combined with wood to create some essential torches. A few of these should be placed inside the house for some light, but players should craft at least fifty for their first incursion to the dark underground areas of Terraria.

Terraria: Your First Mining Trip

Once their starting area is all set up, players will want to go mining for the first time in order to gain both stone and any ores that they can find. Players can start digging wherever but should dig diagonally for about 20 or 30 blocks deep and then switch to a horizontal dig. While digging horizontally players should keep their eyes open for caves in the areas around them to explore. Players will be looking for small veins of either copper or iron ore at the moment. While exploring underground there will be several dangers that players should try their best to avoid. There will be a lot more difficult enemies underground, so players should either kill them with the sword or craft walls to stop themselves from being trapped and killed. If the player falls into a cave full of water, they should try not to panic. Since water will flow to other areas, the player can mine little shafts to lower the water level. If players find themselves beginning to drown they can always just dig out a small alcove above their head and jump into the space above to regain oxygen.

Terraria: Upgrading Your Arsenal

Once players have collected plenty of ore and stone, they should return to the house on the surface. Players can use some stone to create the furnace, which can then begin smelting their ore into metal bars. Players who managed to grab some iron will be able to craft an anvil. Having access to an anvil is integral to progressing further in Terraria.

After a few more trips below ground, players should have enough iron to craft themselves a full set of iron armor, an iron broadsword, and a bow. This equipment isn’t amazing by any means, but they will ensure that players are able to take care of any enemies they encounter as long as they don’t venture to far below ground.

Terraria: Expanding The House

In order to go any further in the world of Terraria, players will want to attract more NPCs that can give and sell them important items. Players can do this by building all new homes, or by just expanding their current house with more rooms. Each house will need to be designed with a floor, walls, a roof, a table and chair, a door, and a light source like a torch. Once all of the proper requirements have met, NPCs can begin moving into empty houses.

NPCs will begin showing up after players complete certain tasks in the game. For example, once the player has over 100 health the Nurse will show up in an empty house the following morning. Players who pay the Nurse money will be able to get healed or cancel negative debuffs they have acquired. Almost every NPC has some kind of prerequisite that players must meet before they will live in one of the houses.

Terraria: Making The Chest and Grappling Hook

One of the next things that players will want to do is create a chest and grappling hook. The chest is relatively easy to craft, as long as the player has access to some extra iron bars. Players will just need to combine those iron bars with any kind of wood in their possession to gain create a chest. Players can then drop any of their extra items in the chest for safekeeping while they are exploring the world.

The grappling hook is another item that players will want to have access to as soon as possible. This item will allow players to navigate the environment much easier, and will help prevent death from falling into caverns. In order to create the grappling hook, players will need to search underground until they encounter piranhas and skeletons. These enemies will sometimes drop hooks when killed. Players will then just need to combine the hook with three iron chains to gain a grappling hook.

Terraria: Summoning the Eye of Cthulhu

After all of this work, players are now on the path to the very first boss of the game: Eye of Cthulhu. Taking this enemy down is extremely important because it will trigger a lot of in-game events that will carry the player into hard mode. Those who want to obtain the Dryad NPC, and therefore be able to destroy Shadow Orbs/Crimson Hearts in a much easier manner.

Players who want to bring down the Eye of Cthulhu will want to make sure they have plenty of higher quality gear first. This means that players should focus on gaining a set of golden armor and plenty of arrows. Golden armor can be crafted from gold bars, so players will need to dig deeper underground to undercover plenty of gold ore. It’s best to make sure that players have plenty of potions at their disposal too, just in case they take a lot of damage.

Once players are stocked up, they need to seek out one of the Demon Altars/Crimson Altars somewhere in the underground area. Players will just need to explore until they manage to track one down. Once the player has found an altar they can combine six lenses from Demon Eyes and combine them together to create a Suspicious Eye. This Eye can then be used at any time during the night to summon the Eye of Cthulhu.

Terraria: Bringing Down the Eye of Cthulhu

The Eye of Cthulhu will have two separate forms that players will need to deal with. The first form will continuously spawn smaller eyes from its iris as it sweeps back and forth above the player. Occasionally it will descend in order to cause damage to the player. Players will just need to move back and forth below the eye while firing arrows into the middle of the Eye. This will attack the smaller eyes and as well as damage the boss. The Eye can move through walls and terrain at will, so players should remember that they cannot use walls or buildings for cover.

Once the player reduces the Eye’s health below 50%, the creature will begin to spin and change. It will be immobile for a few moments, so players should use this time to fire indiscriminately at the boss. Once the transformation is over, the Eye becomes much faster and aggressive. It no longer spits out minions to attack the player, but the attacks are capable of dealing a lot more damage. Players just need to keep dodging attacks and shooting the eye to bring it down.

Once the eye comes down, players will be rewarded with either Crimtane Ore or Demonite Ore. This will allow the player to craft much stronger weapons and tools that will be integral to exploring the lower areas of the underground and fighting stronger enemies. This also sets players on the path to more difficult bosses, but as long as they keep upgrading their equipment and exploring they will do perfectly fine in the world of Terraria.
