Terrifying Sea Monster Is Like Aliens Xenomorph In Real Life

A terrifying deep-sea creature is drawing comparisons to the Alien franchise’s Xenomorph. The extraterrestrial super-predator made its debut in the 1979 classic science-fiction horror film Alien and quickly established itself as one of cinema’s most recognisable monsters. While the movie’s success spawned several sequels and spinoffs, the future of the franchise rests in the hands of the upcoming TV show, something original film director Ridley Scott doesn’t think will compare to his Alien movie.

While Alien’s success can be attributed to great writing, acting, and world-building, the Xenomorph is arguably the most important piece of the franchise’s history. Starting out as artwork from the incredible mind of H. R. Giger, the titular creature was developed by the Swiss artist for the screen, adding protruding inner jaws and acid-like blood to render it a terrifying adversary to the crew of the Nostromo. Despite undergoing many transformations over the years, the original, parasitic space entity remains the series’ most famous iteration to date.

But while the Xenomorph’s alien terror remains fictional, Reddit user ProcrastinationBirb points out that the very real deep-sea viper dogfish shares a striking resemblance with the movie monster. The rare species of dogfish shark has drawn comparisons to the Xenomorph by the Reddit community, thanks to its ability to pull in prey with its extendable jaw. Complete with rubbery black skin, the viper dogfish looks more like a mini Alien creature than something found in the sea.

While the viper dogfish terrifies in real life, the franchise has struggled to terrify audiences in the same way in recent years. An Alien 5 was originally in development by District 9’s Neill Blomkamp, but was ultimately scrapped to move forward with Alien: Covenant, a prequel that failed to emulate the success of the original. Now, with the Alien franchise firmly under the Disney umbrella, the TV series remains the only future project in the works.

The Alien TV show, however, is a while off – at least according to FX Network chief John Landgraf, who stated that it likely won’t hit screens until 2023. Although it’s disappointing that more content is so far away, it gives showrunner Noah Hawley (Fargo) plenty of time to right some of the franchise’s wrongs. Only time will tell if Alien can transition to the small screen, but until then, fans will have to stay out of the seas if they want to avoid coming into contact with a real-life Xenomorph.
