Tesla Cybertruck Will Have This Crazy Hummer EV Feature

Elon Musk has confirmed that the Tesla Cybertruck will get the Hummer EV’s so-called ‘CrabWalk’ feature that will enable it to move diagonally. Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck to widespread excitement and anticipation in 2019, but production of the vehicle has since been delayed and is now only expected to begin in late 2022. In fact, Tesla removed all details about the car from its website after the production delays were announced in October.

The CrabWalk feature, which Musk just confirmed for the Cybertruck, was initially announced last year by GMC for its upcoming Hummer EV. The vehicle is expected to be one of the fastest, most capable electric SUVs with 1,000HP from three motors and a promised 0-60 time of about three seconds. According to General Motors, the CrabWalk mode will enable the vehicle to move diagonally by rotating all four wheels at the same angle by up to 10-degrees. Musk’s tweet now suggests that the Cybertruck will also offer something similar.

In a tweet on Friday, Musk announced that the Cybertruck will not only have the ability to turn on the spot like a tank but will also be able to “drive diagonally like a crab.” He was replying to a query on Twitter about the vehicle’s so-called Tank Turn abilities. In a separate tweet a few minutes earlier, Musk also announced that the 4-engine variant of the Cybertruck will be the first to go into production. Tesla had earlier reported that the vehicle would be available in single, double, and triple motor configurations, but there was no mention of a quad-motor configuration. Musk’s tweet now confirms that it will also be available with a quad-motor option.

Tank Turn May Be Difficult To Implement

It is worth noting that the Crab Mode has been rumored for the Cybertruck ever since Musk announced that the vehicle would have 4-wheel steering. Automotive enthusiasts and large sections of the media interpreted that as the Crab Mode, although there was no official confirmation of the feature either from Musk or from Tesla. However, Musk’s new tweet now confirms that the Cybertruck will, indeed, get the CrabWalk feature like the Hummer EV.

While GMC first announced the CrabWalk for the Hummer EV, the ‘Tank Turn’ was originally demoed by the Rivian R1T pickup in 2019. Since then, though, the company has announced that the feature is delayed and won’t be ready at launch. According to Rivian, that’s primarily because of safety concerns, as getting a vehicle to Tank Turn safely and reliably can be a tricky proposition. That being the case, it will be interesting to see if Tesla will be able to overcome the hurdles and add the cool feature to the Cybertruck without any safety issues.
