Tesla Hits Back At Lucid Motors With Model S Plaid Reveal On Battery Day

In a highly anticipated presentation from Tesla during its ‘Battery Day’ event, CEO Elon Musk in true Musk fashion, revealed ‘one more thing’ before the end of the day. That was the reveal of the new Tesla Model S Plaid powertrain. With the announcement of the Plaid finally hitting the roads, Tesla showcased a track demonstration of the new model that politely, but confidently, crushed recent benchmarks by its competitor, Lucid Motors.

Tesla fans have been anticipating the official announcement of the Plaid Model S for quite some time now, as Elon Musk revealed a demonstration of prototypes burning through a few racetracks around the world last year. The Plaid will be a step above Tesla’s previous 2016 Model S with ‘ludicrous mode,’ the third fastest accelerating production car ever produced at the time, traveling 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds. Tesla competitor, Lucid Motors recently released its first EV sedan after nearly thirteen years of development. Last month with the debut of the Lucid Air, the company boasted new benchmarks that seemed to blow the Model S out of the water. Tesla remained silent during all the hype surrounding Lucid’s impressive sedan debut, most likely because it knew what it would be revealing on Battery Day.

According to a piece by Electrek, the tri-motor Model S Plaid will have all wheel drive and can tackle an impressive 520 miles of range on a single charge. Plaid boasts a top speed of 200 mph, a quarter-mile time below nine seconds, and can zoom from 0-60 mph in under two seconds. Musk has already declared that the Model S Plaid will have the fastest track records ever and already has video footage to support his claim. Battery Day’s Plaid Model demonstration at times felt very similar to Lucid Motors announcement less than a month ago. While it’s clear that Lucid earned its (brief) moment in the spotlight for creating the fastest sedan on the planet, Tesla has once again regained pole position.

Model S Plaid Vs. Lucid Air: By The Numbers

One major benchmark that is relative to both Tesla and Lucid Motors is track time at the 2.2 mile raceway of Laguna Seca in Monterey California. Last year with its Plaid prototype, Tesla clocked in at 1:36:55. Last month, Lucid’s Air sedan comfortably topped that with a time of 1:33. Clearly there have been some upgrades between the prototype and the final Plaid powertrain because Tesla recently rode Laguna Seca in 1:30:3. Musk himself said he thinks Tesla can shave a few more seconds off that time. In terms of other track times, Lucid Motors showcased its Air traveling a quarter mile on a track in 9.9 seconds and sizzling from 0-60 in 2.5 seconds. The ‘second fiddle’ EV manufacturer again held a short tenure as king, as the Plaid now claims to travel the quarter mile in under nine seconds and go from 0-60 in under two seconds.

Another factor Tesla responded to that once again bests Lucid Motors recent accomplishments, is the mile range of its EV. The Lucid Air was recently revealed to bolster an EPA certified 517 miles on a single charge. Never to be outdone, the Plaid can now travel 520 miles on a single charge; a photo finish victory indeed, but another Tesla win nonetheless. Lastly, and probably the biggest tell of how much further ahead Tesla is as a manufacturer is the price of the sedan itself. The new Model S Plaid starts at just under $140,000 without additional options. The Lucid Air Dream Edition (capable of the track times listed above) starts at $169,000. As a larger and more established EV company, Tesla gets the checkered flag at the bank as well. Although Tesla is currently taking orders for the Plaid, none are expected to be delivered until late 2021. The Lucid Air will be available sometime in 2021 or 2022, depending on which version one chooses. It will be interesting to see how Lucid responds and if a more advanced Air sedan is already in the works. For now though, Tesla is still the fastest EV on the planet.
