Thanos Couldnt Physically Snap His Fingers Wearing The Infinity Gauntlet

A group of scientists has proved that Thanos (Josh Brolin) physically snapping was impossible in Avengers: Infinity War. Arguably one of the most jaw-dropping plot twists in the MCU, Marvel shocked audiences when the Mad Titan decimated half of the universe with the click of his fingers. Despite the gallant efforts of the Avengers and their allies, Thanos was still able to sneak a win from them, handing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes their first-ever real defeat since they first assembled in 2012.

Marvel Studios had been teasing the existence of the Mad Titan as early as 2011 in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor. After years of various involvement in other MCU movies via a mix of post-credits appearances and glorified cameos, Thanos was finally properly introduced in Avengers: Infinity War. As the primary villain of the Infinity Saga, the villain’s goal was to collect all six Infinity Stones and use them to wipe out half of the galactic population with just one snap. This was instead of him manually traveling planet to planet and executing his nefarious scheme on a smaller level. The Avengers had a chance to stop Thanos when Thor (Chris Hemsworth) successfully struck him with Stormbreaker. However, the God of Thunder’s emotions got the best of him, and he decided to slowly kill the purple villain, giving just enough time to snap his fingers and disappear half the population.

Thanos’ signature move was at the center of a new study by a group of scientists who found out if the physical act of snapping was possible with him wearing the Infinity Gauntlet. As laid out by EurekAlert!, the scientists “explored the role of friction by covering fingers with different materials, including metallic thimbles to simulate the effects of trying to snap while wearing a metallic gauntlet” as Thanos did in the Phase 3 film. And, in the end, the team discovered that the action was simply not feasible. Read the full comments below:

Assistant Professor Saad Bhamla: “When I first saw the data, I jumped out of my chair … The finger snap occurs in only seven milliseconds, more than twenty times faster than the blink of an eye, which takes more than 150 milliseconds.”

Georgia Tech Undergrad Raghav Acharya: “Our results suggest that Thanos could not have snapped because of his metal armored fingers. So, it’s probably the Hollywood special effects, rather than actual physics, at play! Sorry for the spoiler.”

For what it’s worth, Thanos didn’t really need to snap his fingers to execute the so-called Snap. The mandate of wiping out half of life in the universe, or anything else that the wielder of the Infinity Stones wants to do, comes from the mind rather than physical action. The only reason why the Mad Titan needed to click his fingers was because the character’s creator, Jim Starlin, wanted to have the villain’s evil move to be emphasized by “the most dismissive gesture.” Thanos could have just thought of what he wanted to accomplish, and the elemental crystals would have done it for him. Nevertheless, the Snap will always be associated with the Mad Titan. While comic readers have long known about it, Avengers: Infinity War made it an integral narrative moment in the wider MCU, which much of the current Phase 4 stems from.

Thanos is now gone in the MCU — at least in the Sacred Timeline after Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame — and there’s no indication that Marvel Studios is planning on bringing him back. However, between the franchise’s burgeoning multiverse and the introduction of Eros (Harry Styles), the Mad Titan’s brother, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that more details about the villain will be revealed. Ultimately, even if the Thanos’ Snap in Avengers: Infinity War was physically impossible, its ramifications in the MCU will be felt for years, and serve as proof of the villain’s incredible power.
