Thanos Discovered the Secret of How and Why Superheroes Get Resurrected

The Mad Titan Thanos is one of Marvel’s most memorable villains, and by far one of the most deadly. Known for his pursuit of Death – not the concept but the entity herself – Thanos has committed atrocity after atrocity in an adamant attempt to attract the absolute attention of the aim of his affections. But for all the deaths he has caused in Death’s name, even Thanos knows the heroes have an annoying tendency to return from the dead – and in Marvel: The End, Thanos finds out why.

Before Thanos was the universe-threatening villain that comic fans know today, he made a rather humble first appearance in The Invincible Iron Man #55 as a creation of writer Jim Starlin. Starlin admitted the look of the Mad Titan was partially inspired by DC’s ur-villain Darkseid, though Thanos would eventually come to have another motivation: wooing Death, who in Marvel comics was an actual individual (other individuals represented universal constants, like Eternity). Currently, Thanos is perhaps best known for obtaining the Infinity Stones (called gems in the comics), and using the artifacts to reshape the universe as he sees fit.

In Marvel: The End, Thanos realizes a power in the universe has constantly pushed against his plans. “This force sought to balance the light against the gathering darkness,” he claims. The darkness grew so powerful and strong that “…certain heroes were called back from beyond the veil and pressed again into service. Some recycled more than others.” Here, Thanos talks about the Heart of the Universe, a power source that was harnessed by the Celestial Order via the powerful pharaoh Akhenaten.

Frequent readers of comics, both Marvel and DC, are well aware of the fact that superheroes rarely, if ever, stay dead. A common phrase in comics – “No one stays dead in comics except Uncle Ben, Bucky Barnes and Jason Todd” – has since fallen hilariously out of date, considering that both Bucky Barnes and Jason Todd were resurrected in 2005. This observation is also quite similar to the events of Blackest Night, a DC crossover event that attempted to reanimate dead superheroes through the power of the supervillain Nekron.

Akhenaten, while powerful, would not stand the test of time like Thanos’ popularity. Nor would Thanos’ many attempts to wipe out life via the Infinity Stones; Marvel’s heroes would undoubtedly rise up to combat the threat. Thanos knows that despite his many, many attempts to kill the superheroes of the Marvel Universe, they’ll simply come back to life again.
