Thanos’ Similarity to the Skrulls Isn’t a Coincidence
Some keen-eyed fans have noticed that Thanos’ iconic chin makes him look like a Skrull, and this isn’t a coincidence. The two share some ancestry.

While the Mad Titan Thanos’ resemblance to a Skrull might catch some attention, comic fans know that the similarity is no coincidence. From the odd color to the squiggly chins, the commonalities between Thanos and the Skrulls go back to their cosmic origins. Although born a universe apart, the shapeshifters and Thanos have a common Deviant heritage.
The Skrulls are a race of noble and ferocious warriors from the planet Skrullos who run a vast empire spanning the entire Andromeda Galaxy. From the Kree to the Badoon, they conquer all, and their numbers measure in the trillions. All Skrulls are inherently super-powered, possessing superhuman strength and the ability to shapeshift into any life form. Thanos hails from the planet Titan and is one of the last of his kind. Thanos’ appearance is an anomaly, as normal Titans are almost indistinguishable from humans. Due to his deformities, Thanos went mad and became the monster he believed himself to be. The only remaining Titans are those who managed to survive young Thanos’ deadly attack on their home planet. His sadism and brutality left the Mad Titan utterly alone.
The two appear to have nothing in common, but their physical similarities are no mistake. Thanos’ scored face, squiggly chin, and odd color are all a result of his Deviant Syndrome. Eons before his birth, the Celestials visited Titan and established a superhuman race known as Eternals. The Eternals of Titan, like all Eternals, possess special powers and immortality. Thanos, although born to Eternal parents, is altered due to a genetic disorder, making him a Deviant. The Skrulls, on the other hand, are all Deviants. A billion years ago, the Celestials visit Skrullos. From the primitive race, they forged three variants: Prime Skrulls, Eternal Skrulls, and Deviant Skrulls. Although an entire race of their own, the Deviant Skrulls suffer from the same condition as Thanos, which explains their similarities.
The similarities don’t end there. In Thanos Rising #4 by Jason Aaron and Simone Bianchi, the Titan completely razes his home planet. His motivations are complex, but the result is absolute: he is alone. The Skrulls have a similar background. During the Secret Invasion event, in Incredible Hercules #119 by Greg Pak, Fred van Lente, and Rafa Sandoval, the Deviant Skrulls wipe out the Eternal and Prime Skrulls. Although large in number, the Deviant Skrulls emerge as the only extant race of their planet. Thanos and the Skrulls both serve as evidence of the effects of Deviant Syndrome. Although not raised as killers, both feel the call to kill their immortal counterparts. Both succeed, and both are left alone.
Thanos and the Skrulls have a lot more in common than most fans realize. More than conquerors, the cosmic destiny of the Deviants is to hate the Eternals. Their frightening appearances are merely representations of the alienation they feel. However, in the case of both Thanos and the Skrulls, this feeling is largely self-inflicted. For every light, there must be a dark. “Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.”
