Thanos Was Originally The Main Villain Of Guardians Of The Galaxy

Thanos was originally the main villain of Guardians of the Galaxy. James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the most original movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first decade. Marvel had long planned to go cosmic in Phase 2, and in the original plan, Thanos would’ve taken center stage after his brief first appearance in The Avengers.

But as good as Guardians of the Galaxy may be, it’s not a perfect film. The main villain was Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser, but he was frankly underused, overshadowed by the rest of the ensemble cast. Gunn himself has passed the buck a little, suggesting the problem was with the now-defunct Marvel Creative Committee. “There is some messy villain plot stuff in the first movie I’d like to deal with again,” he admitted. “There was a committee working for Marvel at the time (now defunct) who had a lot of input, and that was primarily where it ended up. It just got a little messy.” It’s likely the problem was figuring how to balance Ronan with a requested Thanos cameo.

Marvel’s original plan for Guardians of the Galaxy featured Thanos a lot more prominently. Before Gunn came on board, Marvel had screenwriter Nicole Perlman working on the project from 2009. The odds seemed slim the film would ever be made, given at that time Marvel was just a rookie studio with two previous movies – Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk – under its belt. Still, Perlman was keen to write a sci-fi film, and over the next few years she prepared and revised a number of scripts. Some of the decisions she made were of massive significance to the franchise: Perlman was the one who chose to base the movie on Dan Abnett’s 2008 relaunch, and she was the one who decided to incorporate an Infinity Stone into the script. But in a significant divergence from the final cut, Perlman envisioned Thanos as the main villain. “He’s a super-fantastic cosmic villain,” she told Buzzfeed. “Thanos was the antagonist was for my drafts all the way through. … But after I had handed in my draft, I think they wanted to keep him for later movies.”

Marvel’s plans began to change around 2012, when Joss Whedon was working on The Avengers. He pitched Thanos as the one secretly responsible for the Chitauri invasion, and Marvel signed off on the post-credits scene. Whedon had no real vision for what to do with Thanos next, but around the same time Marvel began to realize they had a whole lot of MacGuffins in play that could be retconned as Infinity Stones. Soon the Infinity Saga was taking shape, and as a result plans for Guardians of the Galaxy were adjusted. As Gunn recently noted on Twitter, Marvel asked him to keep a Thanos cameo and maybe create an origin story for the Infinity Stones, two requests he complied with. Marvel had come to recognize Thanos as one of their greatest potential villains, and they had bigger plans for him than just having him go up against Star-Lord and his crew.

It was a wise move. Looking back, Guardians became a vital step along the road to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, even if Thanos’ motives as a character hadn’t yet been locked down. Meanwhile, although Guardians of the Galaxy is still criticized for its villain problems, the fact remains it’s still one of the most beloved MCU movies of all.
