The 10 Best Characters In Rockstars Bully

Video games developer Rockstar makes games unlike any other. Not only is the developer the gold standard in sandbox gaming, but their characters are unique and full of that classic Rockstar tongue-in-cheek humor too. That’s no more clear than with its 2006 cult classic game, Bully.

The game is essentially a more PG version of the Grand Theft Auto series, as players control Jimmy, who is sent to boarding school and meets a whole host of strange characters. Whether it’s a homeless man who lives behind a school bus or a perverted gym teacher, the characters of Bully are typically Rockstar-esque.

10 Pete Kowalski

The 10 Best Characters In Rockstars Bully

Of all the characters in Bully, Pete is the most outcast, even more than the Nerds. Like Jimmy and Gary, Pete doesn’t belong to the Nerds, Preps, or any of the other factions, but there’s isn’t any reason as to why. Adding to the mystery of the character is the fact that in the first few cutscenes of the game, Pete has a limp, but it again isn’t explained as to how he got it.

Pete is also one of the most intelligent students in the entire Academy and a decent sidekick to Jimmy. But above all else, he’s the most wholesome character in the game. Even the nerds have been known to bully others, and the teachers are horrible to each other too, but Pete doesn’t have a bad word to say about anybody.

9 Russell Northrop

The 10 Best Characters In Rockstars Bully

The title of the video game is Bully, and Russell is the most obvious representation of this. He encompasses everything about a bully that everyone has come in contact with at least once in their youth, as he’s big, dumb, and aggressive. But he gets even more interesting when Jimmy brings him down a peg or two after a boss fight, and Russell learns to respect the people he once bullied. He becomes loyal to Jimmy and even offers to be his bodyguard.

The character is also unique for several reasons, as he’s the only student who can ride a motorcycle. On top of that, he’s the only student whose childhood home is known, and interestingly enough, it’s in the richer part of Old Bullworth Vale. This means he’s the only student from that area who isn’t a Prep. It’s a backstory just waiting to be told in a sequel.

8 Mr. Burton

The 10 Best Characters In Rockstars Bully

Mr. Burton is a hilariously stereotypical depiction of a gym teacher, as he’s a balding alpha-male who thinks that if students aren’t doing well at dodgeball, then they won’t amount to anything. But as a cliched stereotype, he’s also a huge creep.

The character is a sleazeball, as he forces Jimmy to steal underwear from the girls’ dorm rooms. But players are able to get sweet revenge on the creep in one of the most exciting missions of the game. Whilst Burton is in a porta-potty doing his business, Jimmy uses a tractor to shove it tumbling down the hill.

7 Gary Smith

The 10 Best Characters In Rockstars Bully

Bully might be one of the Rockstar games fans forgot about, but it’s hard to ever forget Gary Smith. Though there are tons of different characters that the title of the game could be referring to, including the principal himself, the most likely of all of them is Gary.

Gary has ambitious plans to take over Bullworth Academy and run the school by spring. And given that Gary seems borderline psychotic, Jimmy and Gary’s rivalry is almost like a high school Batman and Joker. Fan theories make the character more interesting too, as there are some who believe that Gary is actually a werewolf.

6 Ms. Philips

The 10 Best Characters In Rockstars Bully

There are loads of memorable teachers in the game, including Dr. Watts and the aforementioned Mr. Burton, but Ms. Philips is by far the most interesting. As all of the teachers use Jimmy to do their dirty work for them, Ms. Philips is no different.

Ms. Philips had Jimmy perform one of his worst actions in the game, as he broke her boyfriend out of a psychiatric facility. However, she is one of the few teachers who actually like Jimmy, so all of the encounters with her are surprisingly pleasant. She’s also hilariously pretentious, as she gives her critical analyses of the students’ dumbest works of art.

5 Algernon Papadopoulos

The 10 Best Characters In Rockstars Bully

Despite being an introverted Nerd, Algernon is still one of the most eccentric characters in the video game, as has even been known to rap on occasion. And even though he’s one of the most bullied characters in the game, he’s still somewhat of a bully himself, and the insults he hurls at people are hilarious.

Due to his strange hatred of mayonnaise, Algernon often calls people he doesn’t like “mayo-stain” and “mayo-face.” But the best thing about the character from a player’s perspective is his hideout. When Algernon invites Jimmy to use Dragon’s Wing Comics as a safe house, the player has access to the arcade game ConSumo, and it’s one of the best minigames inside a video game.

4 Edna

The 10 Best Characters In Rockstars Bully

Edna is the cafeteria lady of Bullworth Academy, and in real life, nobody in their right mind would ever eat the food she serves. The slop she dishes out is full of her spit, germs, and cigarette smoke, and she genuinely believes it adds flavor. She also has a terrifying, maniacal, Joker-like laugh.

Some of the game’s most interesting missions are doled out by Edna, such as Jimmy having to collect ingredients, protecting her in a cafeteria food fight, and protecting her when she goes on dates. GTA is known for its wild crimes, but Edna’s biggest crime was falling in love with Dr. Watts.

3 Jimmy Hopkins

The 10 Best Characters In Rockstars Bully

It’s easy to believe that the title of the game is named after the playable character Jimmy Hopkins, though that isn’t the case. According to BBC News, that was the reason why Rockstar changed the name of the game to Canis Canem Edit in the UK.

However, Jimmy is anything but a Bully, and he spends most of the game protecting the weaker characters from the real Bullies of the game. The character is a real working-class hero. Outside of that, not much is known about him, other than that he has been expelled from seven schools and that his mother has been married five times.

2 The Hobo

The 10 Best Characters In Rockstars Bully

When it comes to the game’s big brother series, there are so many fascinating Grand Theft Auto locations, and that’s no different with Bully. However, players don’t have to travel far to find one of the most interesting spots in the game.

The “Hobo” resides behind an old school bus in a secret area of the Bullworth Academy campus, and the war veteran/conspiracy theorist is full of amusing anecdotes. Not only that, but he teaches Jimmy new fighting skills in return for transistors, but that could also simply be an excuse for him to fight children.

1 Dr. Crabblesnitch

There are loads of great Grand Theft Auto clones, and Bully is one of the best. That’s not just because it was created by the same developer, but because of how closely it mirrors the antagonists of the acclaimed series. Dr. Crabblesnitch, the principal of Bullworth Academy, is much like the corrupt FBI agents in GTA IV, as he has power over the protagonists because of his level of authority.

Dr. Crabblesnitch is the worst kind of bully because he abuses his power to take advantage of the school children. He is an authoritarian bully, and he punishes students whether they deserve it or not. But regardless of how he treats the pupils, he has the best one-liners of any other character.
